Digital Camera on holiday
I'm going on a round the world trip next year and will undoubtedly be taking hundreds of photos. Instead of paying for and lugging around loads of films I want to take a digital camera but large memory sticks seem to be really expensive.

Is there any way I can download the pictures to somewhere, say every night, so that the memory stick is empty each morning?

I can't take a laptop with me as I'll be backpacking.

I would think your best bet is multiple flash memory sticks (your term) at a price you like.

Backpacking would seem to eliminate any electronic gear which would allow downloading.

Going around the world I would think you could find opprotunities to ftp the files (broadband) to a host site for downloading. After your'e sure they are safe you could delete them from your flash memory to free space. I would do this even if I had enough space, to cover losing gear or having it stolen. I would practice the procedures a number of times to insure success on the road (remember your login and password).

I might bring my own flash rdr (drivers for older OS versions) so your pictures are not accidentally destroyed by other peoples equipment. Many are very small and durable.

Others will hopefully offer better ideas for your situation.

I had thought about sending them home or uploading but wondered whether Internet cafes would allow me to connect my camera? I thought they wouldn't allow you to install software, including drivers for a camera.

I would get the extra memory cards, much easier. Just throw them in the suitcase when they are full and you con buy them pretty much anywhere if you run out. Most pharmacies even overseas have kiosks for uploading your images to CD.

Greetings nightqueen!

Altho' its somewhat dated now, here is one site that I've found useful for hints of vacation related info: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~cumulus/travel.htm

Another site is thus: http://www.cywarp.com/faq_digital_camera_travel.htm

My own recommendation would be the following; use an i-Pod to download images upon... http://cameras.about.com/gi/dynamic/...5FId=173207%23

Best of luck, and please let us know what you decide, and then maybe share some photos after your excursion! Hope its as good as your European travels.

Most countries should have plentiful photo processing stores that offer to download the digital images from the camera and burn them to a CD. This is cheap, and the CD takes up little room, or you could post them home.

Then just erase the memory cards and carry on.

Perhaps you might consider taking the snapshot quality photo's at less then finest quality if they will mostly be used as email attachments or posting on the Internet.
Consider that you will double (at least) the number of photo's you can fit onto a card and the finest quality are too large to Post anyway.
A couple spare $50 sticks and a $30 card reader seem a small investment to add for the lifetime of memories you will bring back from your trip. It is likely you will find photo shops or sympathetic fellow tourists to download sticks via card-reader to a CD or two. PS the card readers do not require downloading any programs to a laptop and cannot cause harm to a borrowed PC.

Only true if the computers are running a modern operating system such as Windows 2000 or XP, otherwise drivers will usually need loading.

Yeah, my uncle went around the world, and there were plenty of places, pharmacies, internet cafes that let him burn cds of his photos. I will use a phrase that I hate... "Too Easy".

Thanks for all the replys everyone.

I like the sound of burning them to a CD, cheap, relativly easy and no need to worry about drivers or specs of internet pcs in the poorer countries I visit.
