Can't cut part of an mpeg-VirtualDub freezes
I've tried to use two video editing programs to cut and save part of an mpeg - VirtualDub and a program I bought called doEasier Easy Video Splitter. Both programs have worked for me .. if one program gets balky about things, then the other program will do it. Neither program will work with this mpeg. There's something funny about the file itself - even though it DOES play in all players (Windows Media, Irfanview, Real Player), it freezes (in all players) when I try to move the slider. When it's playing, I cannot skip easily to different sections because of the slider problem. It's an "mpeg," not an "mpg," if that makes a difference.

In both video-editing programs, the slider poses the same problem. It allows itself to be dragged only a little way forward, then everything freezes, I have to call up Task Manager to get out. The Easy Video Splitter program is somewhat better because, although it won't allow me to drag the slider, it lets me click towards my section frame-by-frame (VD won't allow that) and I can eventually mark the selection, but it takes forever - then when I think I'm set, the program immediately freezes when I instruct it to make the cut. I've tried to make this cut in both programs several times, it's clear it will not work.

Something seems to be missing or needed, but what, another codec? How do I know what I need? I converted the file to an avi to see if a different format would matter, but no, it still freezes solid when I move the slider. I know nothing about video editing matters, I just use these programs to do really simple things. (Which this turned out not to be.)

Thanks, fix it program got it in better shape, then Easy Video Splitter managed to get the part I wanted, VD still couldn't, but I didn't care as long as one of them did. Thank you. I had codecs, Gspot will be great for when things won't play and you don't know what you need. Sometimes irfanview identifies which codec, but sometimes not, so this will be perfect.
