Taking parts of video from a dvd
Ok I hope I can explain this so people can understand it.

A friend of mine recorded a sporting event which our kids played in, and then he made a dvd from the tape. I went into my windows movie maker V 5.1 and wanted to import the movie so I could take bits and pieces from it. When I tried to do this I got the error stating

The file E:\video_TS\VTS_01_0.IFO is not a supported file type, and it cannot be imported into windows movie maker.

The files on the disk are as follows:
ifo file 12kb
video_ts.bup 12kb
Video_ts.vob 34kb
ifo file 62kb
Buf file 62kb
VTS_01_1.vob 0.99gb
VTS_01_2.VOB 0.99gb
VTS_01_3.VOB 528mb

Is there any way I can take bits and pieces of this dvd and put them in my movie maker ? What I want to do is make just clips of my own son. I don't know if windows movie maker is even capable of doing this. If someone could help me with this or point me in the direction of software that can do this I(we) would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you

Cobra

YOu can not edit MPEG1/2 files from within Windows Movie Maker---take the raw taped footage and save as avi's ---then you can do anything you want. In other words, dont use the DVD files--they are highly compressed and wont work in many editing software.

there are programs that you can use to convert the vob files into an AVI file. Gordian Knot is a good start. I also just purchased a DVD Ripper from walmart for $5 that does the same kind of things.

Ok I am going to try and go a different route with this. I was looking at the ATI All-in-wonder 9600 video card. Now I have a high-8 video camera where I want to be able to take the tapes and put them onto a dvd. I also have VHS tapes that I want to put on dvd's. The big question I have is the hi-8 is analog and I am not sure that this particular card will work with analog. I'm sure it will work with a digital video camera. Out of my camera I have a plug that goes into my camera with the other end having a Yellow & White plug, which is naturally used for audio/video. Why is there no red plug as well ?

So my questions are.
1) Will this card be able to do what I want it to do or is it for "digital" ?
2) Why is ther no "RED" jack comng out of my camera ?
3) If this card will nto work, can someone point me in the direction of one that will.

Thank you
Cobra

Well, just to let ya know about one thing. This particular video card will not work in my computer. I believe I now know what AGP means. Accelerated Graphic port ? Apparently I do not have a AGP port on my computer. So now I guess it looks like I will have to try and find a PCI card that does what I want as far as making my vidoes off of the hi-8 and vhs tapes.

i think the reason there is not a red one is because the sound is Mono and not Stereo. there should be a pci card that can do the same things as the agp card, but i don't know if it will be able to do what you want it to do. I used to have a piece of hardward made by a company called Dazzle, i believe they have products that will do the things you want.

Don't know anything about the card you stated, but do know about the DC10Plus from Pinnacle Studios. I purchased the card a few years ago and have had wonderful results with it.
It is a PCI card which connects all kinds of external sources.......camcorder, vcr, dvd.......I connect one plug to my PCI card and the other to the Line in on the computer, and can record to my hard drive, edit with my pinnacle program, and eventually record to DVD. I purchased a used one for my future son in law for Christmas and he has recorded from DVD as well as the camera. Works great.
Just be sure to purchase a card that does Analog as well as digital.......which the DC10 Plus does very well.
