Angry Image File Conversion
Hello All, I have a digital camera that takes photos in the JPG format. However I would like to change the file format from JPG to TIFF, keeping the new TIFF size to approx. the same size as the JPG size. I have Photoshop Elements but cannot figure out out to change the format from JPG to TIFF without changing the resolution. When choosing “Batch Processing”, I didn’t fill in the “Convert Image Size” expecting the new TIFF file to be approx. the same as the JPG file. When I carried out the conversion, without changing the resolution or file size I found that the file size had increased by more than ten times (from 1.4MB to 11.5 MB). Maybe someone who has Photoshop Elements could explain to me how it is done?
I have Win.XP. Home.
Thanks
Regards
John

A TIFF with a file size of a JPG will be quite low in resolution.

JPG uses a compression routine which reduces the file size without significant loss of detail (within reason), but TIFF does not. The TIFF is the expanded copy of the JPG

I don't see how you can keep the resolution and reduce the file size. It's like wanting to fit a gallon into a pint.

Tiff is an uncompressed format... jpg is a compressed format

Tiff files will always be larger than jpg

PNG would be a good format but they will be bigger then the jpg but more closer to the same size then tiff.

Using a batch conversion of jpg's in IrfanView and opting for the "jpg" compression scheme produces tif's that are only about twice as large as the jpg's. I can see no loss of quality. The LZH and ZIP schemes do not significantly compress the tif's and they end up many times larger than the original jpg's.

Of course, making the pics 50% smaller in addition to the compression makes them about the same file size.

You could also try cutting the number of pixels in half to see if that affects the quality to an undesirable degree. It really depends on how good the renderings need to be, how good they were to begin with, what they are pictures of, and how good your eyes are .
