If I film a tree falling in the forest and no-one can hear it, did it happen?
I have a sony trv140e from which I am trying to extract video and make a dvd. It is a digital handycam. I was hoping to use the usb connection from my camera into my computer. I beleive the comp has usb2. I'm trying to use windows moviemaker.
1) Sound. I can hear the sound on my handycam, but I can't get it on my computer. Do I have to send the sound in seperately, or should it be coming in through the usb at the same time as the video capture? Surely it is a part of the movie, so I should be recording sound and vision through the usb cable.
2) From reading Mulder's sticky, it appears that I should be using firewire. I have a dv in/out point on my camera, but no firewire on my camera. I also don't have firewire on my computer but that I can fix if the dv in/out on my camera is what I use.
3) If sound is supposed to come through the usb cable as well, what do i set the input device to be? Is it aux? I assume its not microphone.
4) Mulder seems to indicate that moviemaker won't set up the created file for playing on a dvd player. Again, I'm using windows movie maker and Nero software that care with my dvd burner. I am a sad man if an obvious use of the 2 programs can't create a home dvd from my camera.
I'd appreciate advice on what and where I go from here. The sound issue has really got me stuffed though.
I've explored the help file on win mov maker and have poked around, but still no joy. Hopefully I'm giving someone a great deal of joy at how stupid I am but they'll point me in the right direction
regards
Matt

Make sure you have this driver installed before capturing the video:

You will be capturing as avi files. You will need to convert them to mpeg2 files in order to make dvd's. Do a net search for a program that converts avi files to mpeg2 files.

Here are the steps--

1. Make sure the USB drivers are on your machine
2. Capture video
3. Edit video
4. When you are done, convert to mpeg in order to burn your DVD.

Matt, no matter what, your title to this thread is good, quite good,,,

Seriously, did the above suggestion work? Curious, as I will in the near future be trying some of this too.

Good luck!

Did it work?
Yep,
Updating the sony usb driver worked. I can't confirm beyond that yet as I've been distracted building a gazebo. But capturing now comes with sound, so thanks Linskyjack for the good link. Thanks 2 Hobbes, I try to entertain the masters cause I figure you see lots of silly questions.
regards
Matt
