"Ulead Photo Object" and Scanning
Hello,

I've come across something today that I've not had a problem with in the past.

I scanned a photogaph using my Epson Perfection 1250, chosing PhotoImpact 7 as the destination for the file.

It will only save as a .ufo (Ulead Photo Object). The photo with this extension will not open in another editing program or in "AutoEnhance 2.1". I tried renaming it as a .jpg but I only get a blank when trying to open it in anything other than PhotoImpact 7. Why would it "refuse" to open with "ACDSee", for instance?

I did wonder whether to chose "Imaging" (presumably Windows Imaging) as its destination to see whether there is a difference when using that program.

Has anyone had dealings with "UPO's"? Could almost be a "UFO", the way it's behaving!

Bye,
Penny.

Thanks,
Penny.

You would have to save it from PhotoImpact as a JPG or TIFF. With Photoshop if it won’t save as a JPG it ended up with layers and the image needs flattening before it will save in many formats. It will also limit the formats for images in 16 bit (48 bit in some apps), two bit B&W and lower color images derived from GIFs. Check the bits on the scanner output, although I don’t think PhotoImpact will take 16 bit in the first place.

Hello Slipe,

OK. Thanks very much. I'll try saving it a a JPG or TIFF. The layer thing sounds as thought that's the problem.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Bye,
Penny.

UFO is like PSD files and you can have layers etc in it but you can not open a ufo and anything else but Ulead.

PhotoImpact ufo images are true color 24 bit.

Hello Hewee,

Thanks very much, both of you, for making that clear. What a lot I have to learn! I chose to open them in Windows Imaging and all is well.

Still no camera. But it's early days yet for the order.

Bye,
Penny.
