unable to open JPEG file
Hi, I am pretty new at digital photography and computers...so here goes: I have a large number of pics on my computer that I have been trying to organize in order to back them up in some managable manner. I have a file of pics that was viewable yesterday but now I can only get a JPEG icon in their place now. There are some video clips in the same folder that are viewable. I have Windows XP and they are simply in the my pictures files. Thank you for any help you can give me, these are of my little girl, and we all know that those cannot be replaced. KellyE

so, when you double-click on the little thumbnail versions of the pictures, they don't open properly? what program(s) have you been attempting to open them with? also, are they saved as .jpg files? (( when in windows explorer, go to the "views" menu and hit "details"; under "file type", it should say ".jpg". ))

the first thing you should do is attempt to open them using whatever program(s) came with your digital camera. most come with specific image-downloading software and viewing software. this will probably be your best bet.

you may want to try either inserting them in a microsoft word document (( on the top where the menus are: insert --> picture --> from file )) just to make sure they won't show up. or, you could right-click on the thumbnail of the picture, go to "open with" and try out some of the image programs on your computer. perhaps one can open it.

that's all i can really think of; please let me know how that works out for you. if it doesn't work, please write all the details you can (( i.e., what programs you tried, etc. ))

You desciption of your problem is a bit vague KellyE. But, you might try this.

Open the folder so that these photos with "JPEG icons" are showing.
Then, go up to your "most upper tool bar" and click on "View."
From the drop-down list, click on "Thumbnails."

You should see thumbnails of the photos listed in this folder now.

Is this what you were referring to?

I would also recommend that you copy them to a CDR disc if your computer has a CDRW Drive ..... for safe keeping.
