mini dv camera question
I have a samsung SCD6040 minidv camcorder. I record something onto a dv tape, and I want to transfer it to my hard drive, and the only way I have figured out how to do this is using the crap software that came with the cam. It doesn't transfer it good quality. I have to play the recording on the cam, then run the software, and I can record it through there onto my hard drive. There is no sound, and the quality is garbage. Is there another way to get the video from the dv tape?

Any help is apprecited
specs in my sig

You have to buy a firewire kit. Its a PCI card and firewire. Also known as 1394.

Try to find a kit like this : http://www.adstech.com/products/API3...asp?pid=API300

You're camcorder will most definately have a firewire port.

Whoops, I should have mentioned, I have all the proper connections. I have a firewire port and cable.
The cam came with the USB cable, but I had to buy the firewire cable. When I connect the camera using the firewire cable, I can only record streaming video, I can't pull recorded video off of the dv tape. I can do that with the USB cable, but the quality is so bad.
I can do all of this on my Ibook laptop without a problem, the quality is 100 times better than using the samsung proprietary software. I was hoping to be able to work with the video on my pc, not my MAC, its a 700 MHZ Ibook G3.

If you can record streaming, you should be able to capture video from the camera when it is in play mode.

Thumbs up Use Windows Movie Maker
If your camera is auto detected by XP then you should be able to capture the video with Windows Movie Maker via firewire. I'd only use MM to capture the video not for doing any editing...pretty limited program for editing.
Do a google search on windows movie maker and you'll find reviews and how-to's.
