Why is my IrfanView "Crop" option dimmed out?
Hi All,

I downloaded the IrfanView program and tried to learn to Crop a picture. After I selected the picture I noticed the "Crop" option is dimmed out? Could someone tell me why and how I can fix it?

Thank you in advance.

Select the area of the picture that you wish to crop, and then the option should be available.

Thank you ThitPhil, but where is that 'selection' button which I can click then drag a dotted box like in MS Paint?

Crop in Irfanview
fei888,
I didn't know either so I played around and found that you could start the rectangle by holding down the left click button. Then drag your rectangle. Then go to Edit and select "Cut - leave selection". I don't know where to go from there but maybe this will give you a start.

Thank you Ol' Young, I still think someone out there knows all the trick about 'Crop' with IrfanView. I will continue to experiment too.

Buck, thank you. I will try that a little later on. If my 'Crop" option is not dimmed out.

Ol' Young has explained how you do it, but I will try to walk you through it.
When you have your picture open, let's pretend we want to "crop" the centre.

So, visualize a "window" that would surround that centre.

In the upper left portion of the picture, we will start this "window" by clicking and holding the left mouse button.
Then, to complete this "window", drag the mouse down across to the lower right hand corner.

As you do this, you should see an outline appear that changes shape as you drag the mouse.

When you have this "window" around the area that you wish to keep, select Edit > Crop Selection and that centre "window" now fills the screen.

then after that it's the Save as...

I got it. Thank you all so very much.

Is Square and Rectangle the only shape one can select and crop?

Glad to hear that you've "got it".

And, yes. Only Squares and Rectangles.
