Bringing Digital SLR on trip
i have a nice digital SLR (Nikon D70) and i am doing an Outward Bound trip in august. I have been thinking of bringing it however i do not want to damage or put my camera in a postion to break, since it is a backpacking trip. any ideas how i can easily carry it and keep it dry/protect but easily accesible?

Just keep it in its case when not in use. Don't use it underwater and for Pete's sake don't let a bear play with it.
How does it do with batteries? Mine eats them like candy!

Do you have a hard camera case for it?

Howdy

I have one... for sale by the way :-) ... and it is a pretty rugged camera...

As CouchMaster says, keep it in a case, and keep the lens changes to a minimum to prevent dust on the sensor.

no i dun have a case for it unfortunetly except a big *** carring case which im not carrying on top of a backpack.... but battery sense.... as long as im not taking 100 pcs a min i'll be fine... it uses a proprietory battey and i have 2 of them... and also a lil coverter that will hold 2 regular lithum camera batteries if need be. lol my main concern would be to keep it dry....

Keep a couple of good quality plastic bags in your backpack and if it looks like you going to get drenched wrap camera bag and all in some dry clothing and seal in the bags. Never put your camera just a plastic bag as condensation can be nearly as bad as rain.

I find when backpacking its best to have my camera bag attached to my front straps so I have compfortable access the camera at any time.

The battery life is great for that camera... My guess is that you will run out of card space long before the battery needs to be replaced unless you are going to take a laptop or external hard drive along with you to transfer files to

yea yea.... gonna make sure i have enough card space....

also, my case is big enough for 2 cameras 3 lens (1 attached to a a camera, other 2 in compartments) so that might be much to carry...

I have a soft padded case that includes a 'pull out' waterproof cover. It's not specific to my camera but has velcro 'walls' that can be adjusted for a snug fit. I've only had to use the pull out cover once - it wasn't raining very hard and it did keep everything dry...but I can't say whether it's fully waterproof or just water resistant. You might be able to find something similar to fit your camera by searching camera/accessory shops.

Have a good trip!

There are a lot of waterproof camera bags as well as generic waterproof bags available for your needs. Here is one example: http://www.rei.com/online/store/Prod...cat=REI_SEARCH
Also look at places like West Marine (boating supply retailer) and you will find many.
There are padded ones, underwater "proof" bags, hard and soft as well as water proof plastic "baggies" available.
Good Luck and have fun
