Picture It (
comic sans
Hello,
using Picture it 9 i have successfully removed a portion of a picture saved it on the clip board and pasted it on to another picture.
What i have not been able to do is to save the extracted portion for use in another programme. say Ulead Studio 9.
Any help would be greatly appreciated (silver surfer) Jack

If you wish to use the extracted portion of the image in a totally seperate programme, say Word for e.g.:

Once you have removed the portion that you require to the clipboard, create a new blank image (File New) and paste in to that image. This new image will now contain just the selection that you removed from the first.

Now save that image as a JPEG (or any other appropriate file format), then from Word... select Insert - Picture - From File.

If this is what you are after then , if not please provide more specifics on which programmes you're wanting to use the image in.

Copying pictures from "Picture It"
Hello ITTRAIN,
Thank you for your reply, Ideally I would like to have the extracted portion of the picture available in "My pictures" using Windows XP. From your reply it seems that this is possible. Then once in "My Pictures" I would then have it available to insert into a movie editing package an e-mail or a word document.
Would that work OK?.
Thank you for your help.

I have the old Picture It 98 and I found saving thing in other formats do not work right. MS seems to want you to use there own format to save things right.
This may not be true in the newer versions.
But hey get Ulead PhotoImpact and then it would be easy to get things into Ulead Studio 9.

Maybe even get the upgrade price too.

I believe what you are trying to do is set the white background color to "transparent" for posting the cutout to other programs. I am not familiar with the two programs you mentioned but I am sure the help screens on them will show how to use that feature.

When you paste from the clipboard to the new image, does the image appear on the screen before you save... and are you able to save as .jpg, etc.?

As a last resort, you could always download Picasa free from Google. This is even simpler to achieve what you're after. Just open the image that you which to edit - select crop, manual - crop the image - File save a copy - That's it!

Hello ITTRAIN
No the image is selected using the edge finder tool the the selection is then copied to the clip board. A new picture is then introduced to a blank canvas and the selection on the clip board is then pasted onto the new image, just the image no white background. Now if you do as suggested IE paste the clip board image onto a blank canvas it will have a white background .There is little point at this stage in saving it for use elsewhere as it will also save the white background I hope I have explained myself OK

Okay I understand now.

What you need to create is a transparent GIF image file, but I don't believe that this is supported in PictureIt.

1. Create a transparent .gif, where the white parts of the image remain transparent allowing everything underneath to show through.

A good resource for more information about gifs is here and you can see what software and tutorials are available. Most software that I have seen is for purchase with a 30 day trial. The package that I use for this type of work is Gif Animator.

There may be freeware software available that does the same job, but if there is, I am yet to come across it.

If you can save the image layer you made as a .psd file then that would be better then a .gif

But better to get PhotoImpact that comes with Gif Animator because you be able to do so much more.

Oddly enough, that was my first thought too as I am a PS user.

The only reason that I left that bit out in favor of .gif was due to compatability options when importing the image to other software. GIF seems to be more widely supported across vendors than PSD.

The trouble I think is MS does not like you to save in other formats but wants you to save in the .mix format.
Sure you have the save-as option and can save in other formats but when I used to use PI to do so they would not save right or the small .gif was now 20 times bigger and looked like ???? when I never changed the file size. Only things like this happen with PI or only with me using PI.

There is a detailed tutorial right here. Follow as for transparent .gif in order to create as discussed above.
