Current setup adequate for video editing?
Will my current setup be adequate for video editing?

PC:
Dell Dimension 4300 w/XP Home sp2
1.6 ghz
512 mb ram
160 gb secondary HD (7200 rpm) for video storage

SW:
Screenblast Movie Studio 3.0

I have analog 8mm video tape that I want to edit and convert to DVD/VCD format.

Yea looks ok not familiar with Screenblast Movie Studio 3.0 I use pinnacle and have 80GB secondary HD 512Ram and use the secondary for video files.

A tip after you download the files to the 160GB defrag it.

You may consider going to 1GB of RAM.

erick295,

1 gb of RAM will cost about $230 for two 512mb (SDRAM) sticks. I'll have to remove the existing (2) 256 mb sticks because the pc has only two mem slots.

Will the extra RAM make enough of a difference or should I just buy a new PC with a faster cpu ghz and newer/faster RAM?

I would say try the PC you have and see...depending on how much editing you are going to be doing and if nothing else you PC now will made a very good benchmark.

A lot depends on the software you use-----Very basic entry level NLE's (non-linear editors) don't need so much computing power. As your needs develop, you will find that your computer needs to have a faster processor, more ram and of course, a dedicated drive that will ONLY house your video clips.
