Unhappy Newbie Question: Save Image As Format?
I'm going to blame my dr's and meds for this loss, but I swear I simply can't remember "how" to change this. I have a new pc and when I try to save any image (from email, a website etc) it automatically comes up as "untitled.bmp" I don't get the option to save the image as a JPEG, or GIF or PNG... nothing, only Bitmaps. I thought I just needed to change it in my folder options with the file association, but I checked that and I do have those files associated to open with certain programs. I can ofcourse open the BMP into a program and then "save as" another file type, but that's getting annoying.

What on Earth do I need to do to be able save any given image as their specified file type instead of only bitmaps??

I kind of skimmed the boards but didn't see anything of this nature posted. I know this is extremely basic and I'm going to slap myself later for not knowing the answer, but I *really* can't remember. *laughs*

Thanks to anyone who can slip me a reminder on how.

(I'll post this though I assume you'll know considering it's a newer pc, I'm running Windows XP Home.)

I "stole" this from a web site:

JPG's - Only Saves as a Bitmap

The option to save as jpeg is not available: Clear your Temporary Internet Files, then try again.

Go to IE/Internet Options/Delete Files. Also in Settings change the amount to 40 MB. This will help in preventing the index files from becoming overloaded.

If that doesn't help check your settings here: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg. For Content Type, it should read "image/jpeg".
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpeg. For content Type, it should read: image/jpeg
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif. For Content Type is should read "image/gif"

Windows XP ... I'm assuming you're using Windows Image n Fax Viewer

May I suggest making this Freeware your default viewer and basic Image editor ...

It'll do a lot more than "save as"

Thanks!
TY steigrafx, I did check all of those (with your help) and they all ended up being correct.

My default image editor is Photo Impact, I have PS & PSP also. After asking around I did get sent an article on that exact subject.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;810978

I wanted to post incase anyone else has the problem. MY pc did just start acting kind of weird and I'm getting errors which is extremely unlike me, as I always run scans regularly and etc.

I really thought this was something I needed to change a setting for. And maybe it's just an IE problem, I honestly didn't check other browsers, I just kind of "assumed". Right now it allows me to save some other file types, but still doesn't let me save JPEG's sooooooo..... I'll have to keep working on that.

Thanks much for all of the suggestions though, I was desperately at a loss on what to do.
