Solved: Nikonians

I am not a Photographer. (I take pictures and do extreme modifications on them).
Anyway, I don't understand the numbering system on lense. I have a Nikon D70 and am looking for a powerful zoom (cheap)
But when I look at the numbers it doesn't tell me what "reach" it has.
(like I can understand 2x or 4x but 300mm?)
I have 2 lense in mind and I'm not really sure which will bring-in distant objects the best...
They are;
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/75300.htm
http://www.nikonians.org/html/resour...28-200g-1.html
What do you think?
Thank You

Define distant objects--for example do you want a framed filled shot of a bird on a branch at 50'-------------? Also remember that most digital SLR's have a multiplier---My Canon requires you to multiply the focal length by 1.6----so a 300mm lens becomes a 480 mm lens.. This might be of use for you----http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/focal_lengths.shtml It gives you a look at different focal lengths and how they look----By the way, the most important part of your SLR are the lenses. Glass is key.

Thanx,
Yeh, I would only get "real" Nikon glass. As you might have noticed the 28-200 is "ED".
I think these are good lense. (for the $$$).

Now I'm off to follow your link. (what an adventure the internet is)
Your response is much appreciated.
Enjoy!
AZ

Oh, the multiplier for the D70 is 1.5.

Hi AZ...long time no speak/type ...

Start with 35mm as a base ... 2x=70mm ... 3x=105mm ... 4x=140mm etc...you get the idea

keep in mind the D70 has a 1.5 multiplier because of the sensor size... sometimes this is a dis-advantage sometimes it helps... reach comes to mind...

200mm=300mm on your D70 when compared to a traditional fullframe film body

The older Nikkor 80-200 lens is a terrific/legendary performer...

Hi buck,
Yeh, we had some good fun. Miss that. I'm just too wild!
Thanks, and to your credit I asked the same question at the Nikonians Forum, and got everything but an answer. So here I am and I'm glad I came (got to say hi to an old friend too).
I come around once in a while but I don't go to Random.
Hey, say hi for me! I connected w/ Candy not long ago in Hardware (I think it was Hdwe)
So the 75-300 is the more powerful lense (for far away objects)
Peace Brother, and Happy Holidays to You and Yours.

Hi again AZ

Happy Holidays and every other day to you AZ well...

yep for total focal length... at the long end 300 will equal 450... approx 12x... on the D70..I had a D70 and it was a great camera... I sold it to a friend that had just gone pro and wanted a reliable backup camera... wish that I had not sold it...

Not sure what your shooting or how much you want to spend but if you shoot in good light look for a nikkor 80-400 VR... I own one ... great performer on that camera as long as there is good light...

I'll check out the 80-400 VR and the 80-200 as well. I do appreciate the info and know it's reliable because I remember your excellent nature shots.

I'll let you know what I end up with. (I'm impatient but I try to take the time to make a good decision.)
Later...

One other things---check out the f stop rating on the lens (maximum opening) My Canon 70-200mm has a rating of 2.8 but is also available as a 4.0 lens. That could effect your decisions particularly if you want to shoot in low light conditions.

Hey Linskyjack,what would I do w/o you?
I ordered a Nikon 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF Zoom Nikkor http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/75300.htm
Oldie but Goodie I hope. I like the things about it that some wouldn't, like (weight - push/pull - no 3D Matrix). I've read a lot of good reviews on it and it was cheap ($250 delivered w/case-uv lens) Mint condition. I think it will fit my needs. (If not I can sell it for what I paid and try again.) It weighs 6 oz's more than the D70 so I'll use the Lense mount and it should balance pretty good. (I never take a picture w/o my tripod).

Thanks for all your help!

I should have the lense by Wednsday and I'll take a picture of the South Mtns from my back yard and post it on my website for you.

This was fun.
Later Buck
