Yes, you can batch resize with Irfanview. Under the file menu, choose batch conversion/rename. Select your files, output directory, and use the same format. Choose 'work as' batch conversion. Now check: Use advanced settings. Click the 'Set Advanced Options' box. There you will find everything you need.

A quicker and much simpler batch resizer can be put on your right click menu. Download Microsoft's Image Resizer:XP Power Toys.

Those Power Toys are only for XP.

Just to clarify.
Do you mean "Iview" or "Irfanview" ?
as they are 2 different programs.

I always call Irafnview "iview" - that's a live and learn moment for me, xgerryx!
But, did mean Irfanview.
I did both of your suggestions, moper. Did a batch resizing in Irfanview according to your instructions and also got Power Toy Resizer. I'm liking both of them. Irfanview gives lots of selection for sizes, while Powertoy Resizer is fast but offers limited sizes. Handy having it in the right-click menu.
Thank you a lot!

The Windows resizer is a normal resize where Irfanview is defaulted to the Lanczos filter which does a better job. You wouldn’t see much difference with a downsize but you wouldn’t want to upsample with the Windows resizer.

Irfanview thumbnails is a good tool if you want to bulk resize particular images rather than an entire file. You can go to thumbnail options and make the thumbnails larger so you can see what you are doing better. I use 150 pixels because it gives 4 abreast and still leaves room for the navigator. Just hold the Ctrl key while you select the images you want to resize and hit the “b” key. The batch box opens with all of the images you selected already in the resize box.

You can even make a new subfolder to put the resized images in so you don’t take a chance of overwriting your originals. It is easier to make a subfolder in the Irfanview thumbnail navigator than it is in Windows Explorer. Just right click a folder and select to make a subfolder. You have to do that before selecting your images and hitting the b key.

Slipe, thanks for the info on Irfanview Thumbnails. You know , I opened that program a couple of times and said, 'I got no use for this'. Was I wrong. What a handy program. It amazes me on how many things this free, small, program can do really well.

One question, though. It seems that in the thumbnail program you are limited to making selections from only one folder at a time. Whereas in the batch dialog, you can select from mutiple folders. Any way around this?

Wow, I just did that too! Great!
(Also I realized I call it "iview" because that's the name of its setup file.)

I don’t know of a way. You can select from the first thumbnail group and then pull others over in the dialog box as if you had started with the dialog. But it seems to handle only one group of thumbnails at once.

No, you can't do this in Windows Explorer either. Only one folder can be in focus at one time.

Update. The new version of Irfanview (3.98) has added the option of "Load thumbs from all subfolders". That increases it's versatility a bit.

Thanks for the tip. The announcement for 3.98 said it was just a bug fix for slideshows. I didn’t bother with it since I don’t do slideshows.

I’ve used a program called EXIF Viewer for several years now because it lets you display everything in subfolders. It is a little quicker for getting the EXIF information, but the new feature in Irfanview makes it redundant. It does display the thumbs a little faster even if I reduce the size in Irfanview. I’m guessing Irfanview generates the thumbs from the images where the viewer uses the thumbs embedded in the EXIF. Images with no EXIF take longer to generate in the viewer. Images with EXIF will generate hundreds of thumbs in a second or two.

That is a great feature. I do all of my sorting and deleting in Irfanview thumbs.

I figured out a workaround to selecting thumbnails from mutiple folders and have them appear in the batch dialog.
First open Irfanview and just let it run.
Open the Thumbnail program.
Make your selections from one folder and click 'Save selected thumbs as current slideshow'
Make selections in next folder and click 'Append selected thumbs to current slideshow'
When you are done selecting, press 'W'
Click 'Save filenames as text' and save the file somewhere.
Press 'B' and click 'Load text'
There they are.

You don't need Irfanview running.
