Freeware Photo Editing Software
Hi all,

I just bought a used digital camera, nothing fancy (Vivitar ViviCam 3632 2.0 mp), but it's my first dig. camera!

I'm finding that the colours in the pictures are a bit too vivid though, and I'm just using Kodak EasyShare software (that you get with the picture CD's) right now, and I'm not able to change the colour intensity. Is there a good freeware program I could use? I searched this forum, and found a few Freeware programs, such as:

Paintshop Pro 7 free
irfanview free
The Gimp free

Can anyone recommend one which would allow me the option of adjusting the colour? Right now I can only adjust brightness/contrast or exposure, none of which is producing good results. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

Any program that has adjustments for Saturation should be able to adjust the whole picture to detune the color intensity. But it may take experimentation to get the amount you desire.

There are other controls, as well as Saturation, in IrfanView, such as RGB (Red Green Blue) sliders, if your pictures have a bit too much of one or two of those colors.
Some other programs may also have HSI (Hue Saturation Intensity) controls to do the tailoring you may want.

These types of controls usually affect the whole picture.

Any program worth it's salt is going to have a learning curve attached. Practice, practice and then practice.

I'd recommend PSP 7. Its a good program with good onboard help files.
Irfanview is also a very handy light weight program to have in your photography tool kit.

The gimp although a good program can be a bit hard to get into but well worth looking at a bit further down the track.

I see you have rated yourself as "a beginner"
So a valuable word of warning:

"Never work on your original images, always work on copies."

Have fun and feel free to call back here for help.

Hi ChuckE, Wimpy 369, and xgerryx and thanks for your replies! You've given me some good information. I will take a look at IrfanView, and PSP 7 for now as you've recommended, and I'll be sure to work from copies! :P Thanks again!

The general idea is to use Irfanview for your everyday viewing and basic image editing.
It makes a very good default viewer/editor (fast and relatively simple) - replacing Windows Image n Fax viewer.

Then use PSP for the tougher editing chores.
Here's a link for a free PSP ...

Hi Noyb, thanks! Yeah, it's easy to drag & drop my photos into Irfanview and do the simple editing of adjusting the colour saturation, which is what I was looking to do for now - and it seems pretty easy. Thanks for the link to PSP.

Irfanview has been my default viewer/editor for years ... I'll probably never switch.
Since it's my system default ... I don't need to drag n drop .. just open n go.

Maybe this'll help you get started with setting up....

On the MISC 2 Tab ... you can assign PSP as the extended editor... then have Irfanview send it to PSP if you need "More Power"

Thanks again Noyb - I appreciate your help and tips. I just noticed your avatar - is it the robot from the 80's movie "Short Circuit"? If so, what's the name of it again?
