Solved: Irfanview batch text
As a rule I use Thumbs Plus to 'stamp' details on the front on proofs and whilst complex it works well.

However the other day I noticed a feature in irfanview to have text added during a batch conversion. BUT I can't seem to work it out.

If I select a single image , draw a text box, hit crtlT I get the info I want , file name e.g. s291 - 001 - Smith PROOF. Perfect. But that would very time consuming when doing a 200+ job that way.

When I use the batch conversion I can select 'use advanced options' and check the 'overlay text' box , the string remains the same as before, but when I press start, the result is just the first 4 digits of the file name i.e s291, try as i may I can't get it to work as it does doing a single one.

Obviously I'm missing a vital thing here, can someone help me?

Cheers

PP

Batch rename the files with just ### starting with 001. Now your files will be named 001 through say 221 but still with a JPG extension. Send them to a different folder so you don’t mess up the original file names.

Then run the batch conversion on the new folder with batch conversion without rename and put in the overlay box: S291-$N-Smith You will get S291-001-Smith through S291-221-Smith. The $N command gives the file name without the extension. You will have tell it to overwrite your renamed files because it doesn’t change the file name.

Actually that's basically what I was doing, sort of, kind of..... but my problem I think was also to do with the x and y axis and the width and height too. Because I'd left the settings on ZERO, this meant that only a tiny part of the text was available.

I ended up with this setting in the screen shot below.

Thankyou for your help

It worked for me the first time and with the X and Y coordinates left at zero. When I increased the font to 45 it was obvious I needed more space and I increased the width and height, but it printed at that size fine with zero X and Y as well. I think X and Y just offset the overlay from its default left top, right top, left bottom and right bottom positions. You just need more width and height if you increase the font size or have a long file name.

Edit: I would think that if you used top or bottom right you would decrease your available space with an X offset and if you used bottom left or right you would decrease your space with a Y offset. That is unless it will take a negative number. You could actually reduce your space with an upper left position, but the font and file size would have to be large or the X or Y offset very large.

In any case I think the X and Y coordinates have nothing to do with increasing your space for the overlay.

Yes slipe, I understand that, but I needed the text to be large and over the subject slightly to ward off copying. I've already had issues with minilabs copying my work and just cropping out the file name and © details, quite a simple thing to do with a small font and edge placement.

Anyway, it works perfectly now thanks, and basicaly is a darn sight easier to modify than Thumbs Plus which I've used for years.

I was referring to that quote. Only the X and Y coordinate default to zero and they don’t have anything to do with dropping the last part of your text.

Since you seem to have understood everything before you asked your question it seems a waste of time.

There is absolutely no need for that attitude

Now that fact should be obvious from my statement "Obviously I'm missing a vital thing here, can someone help me?" that it wasn't a waste of time.

No small wonder this forum is a shadow of it's former self.

For your information, I asked the question with good faith because I couldn't work it out.
With YOUR help I worked it out and then found if I set the x and y axis I got a better placement.

Once again I thank you for your help, however how better would it have been without your final note of sarcasm.

Have you ever used Exifer? http://www.friedemann-schmidt.com/software/exifer/

Among many things it does batch stamping, you can grab info from the EXIF data, filenames, custom comments etc. You can also do batch editing of the EXIF data.
