cutting out background
Can anyone help me on this? It is probably really basic! I have been attempting to create custom covers for CD's that I have made of my old vinyl records. I have been doing this with my old version 4 photoshop. How do I go about placing a photograph of an object into the canvas with the background edited out? All I can do at the minute is insert the whole photo/image or a rectangular crop. I have read about exporting a clipping path but is there any way of using that back in photoshop? Do I need a seperate program and if so which would be the best?
Your help would be much appreciated
Cheers
Beth

DO you have a newer version of Photoshop? Version 7 has an Extract filter, but I am not sure about version 4. You can also draw a mask around the part you want to extract and copy the area that is masked into a new image.

Version 4 has everything you need for selections. It has the lasso, magic wand and color range select. Between those you can do most selections. It also has masks.

This is a good quickie tutorial. You can look up others. To cut something out you “select” it. So you are looking for something like “photoshop selection tutorial” in Google. http://www.elated.com/tutorials/grap...hop/selecting/ I don’t think you have the magnetic lasso but you should have everything else.

You might also look up some masking tutorials. In quick mask mode you can paint with white to add to your selection or paint with black to subtract from it. Some people use it for the whole selection and some just to touch a selection up. This will get you started: http://www.graphic-design.com/Photos...quickmask.html

After you select your background just hit the Delete key. Or if it is easier to select the subject than the background go Select > Inverse and then hit the Del key.
