Question Solved: How to compress JPEG further
I have some photos which are as large as 1.5 MB.These photos are in JPEG format. Is any further compression possible on it,so that I can upload it to various web services that don't provide much space?

PS:I scanned the photos with 600 dpi.

Thanks in advance...

The more the files get compressed the worse the picture will look quality wise. Irfanview will compress images as will most image editing applications.

Thank you so much for assisting me.I have managed to compress my pictures to a great extent with out losing much (read any) quality. The 1.5 MB picture is now just an odd 350 KB.

Once again...thank you!

You will do much better scanning photos at 300 PPI and using less compression. You might read this: http://scantips.com/basics08.html

Image resize to about 640 X 480 pixels
SAVE-AS new filename MORE-use the slider to compress to about 30% (the amount varies with every program-just about a third of the way from the right end.
This will still look pretty good on-screen but make poor prints-so SAVE THE ORIGINAL WITH ANOTHER NAME

Also something else you can do and your have to try it to see how will it works.
But if you have Photo Shop then save the image in .psd format. Then zip it up and compress it. You will not have to worry about .jpg artifacts. Not all .psd files that are so much bigger will compress and save you on file size after it is zipped up but I have seen it work. Guess it has to do with what is in the image that effects how you get the file size down zipping it up.

But why are you uploading them? Are they to show others or just so they can get and download them?

Sorry for being late in the thread.

Hewee,I want to upload them to my Orkut profile which doesn't support >500KB image files. You're quite right that I needn't have to worry about the quality of the picture,if I had Photoshop. But for me Irfanview has done a good job.Even after saving the image in 40% of its quality,it was extremely good.Atleast I couldn't find out any deviation in the quality, when it was viewed in normal size.

Once again thank you for your kind support.
