change bmp files to jpeg
Is there a free program that will permit me to convert bmp files in Picasa to jpeg files? I have over 1000 images on DVD disks that have to be changed.

Create a new folder somewhere for the output images. Open irfanview, click file>batch conversion. Browse to the directory you want to convert on the upper right. Select the files by highlighting and clicking the add button which will place them in the left pane. If you want to convert the entire folder click add all. Select the folder you created for out put, select your output format and options and click start on the upper top of the pane.

The current Version of Irfanview has a bug in the Batch Processing ... the "Add All" button doesn't work.

You can get the fix here ... http://www.irfanview-online.com/down...ew=detail&id=2

Create a new folder for the processed Images.
Open one of the bmps to be converted ....
Then ...

Going to need a little more info ... what are you trying to do ?
Yes .. burn them to a CD/DVD or to an external HD.

If you've never batch processed images before .. you can make a mistake.
Be sure to backup your original images.

You can batch process the bmp images from one folder (or folders) ...
and have the program put the jpeg conversions in another folder(s).
I would recommend you work this way.

Did I cover the question ?

thecoalman told you how to do it in Irfanview. If you also look in the Irfanview help files (batch conversion), you'll get more detailed info.

Glad to see you got them done!

btw, I don't know if you did it this way or not, but next time it might be a good idea to copy the BMP files to a folder on the Harddrive 1st before converting as the Optical drive read speed would not be as fast as the Harddrives; also less likelyhood of errors occuring because of dirt etc!
