Lightbulb Converting AOL .art files into jpegs ??
Hi Friends !

This is what I know ? I once was w/ AOL & saved my images in .ART file form not knowing. Now some 10 yrs. later(not w/ AOL for 6 yrs. now) I was in the middle of converting all those AOL.art files into jpegs by using my windows picture & fax viewer. ....................Then, long & behold one day recently I could not use this method anymore ? Reason is,I'm told is because microsoft w/ IE decided that those AOL.art files could be used as a security breech so to speak and embedded a update into the IE browser not allowing it to convert?open AOL.art files to open. Now I'm sort of stuck w/ these AOL.art files(of which I need to convert to jpeg) before I delete them ?
Yes, I know & have heard & have tryed alot of BROWSERS(advant -firefox - opera - etc.) & even alot of many graphic viewers(infranview-image convert-picusizer, etc.) OF WHICH TO STILL NO AVAIL !!
.................Simply, but kindly, I ask YOU the membership, does anyone know of any software that will CONVERT these AOL.art files into jpeg ? .............if not I ask you this also : 1. Will an earlier version of IE still work ?
2. If I join AOL again (just till I convert all my files) will I be able to convert them ?

................any help will be greatly apreciated & I thank you all !!!

Best To All !!

You can look here.

http://lists.thedatalist.com/pages/G...it~Viewers.htm

Maybe XnView will work.

http://perso.orange.fr/pierre.g/xnview/enfeatures.html

You can download it from here.

http://perso.orange.fr/pierre.g/xnvi...loadwin32.html

There is also the "ZIP file" version you can just unzip to it's own folder and use without having to install it.
Then there are the "AddOns for Standard/Minimal version" and "XnView v1.82.4 Complete version (Plugins & NConvert)"
I think just getting the XnView v1.82.4 Complete version (Plugins & NConvert) will be all you need to add to the program.
It will tell you in a readme file where to put the plug-ins, add-ons

Thanks ferrija1 for the link.
I just downloaded the .art file to test and see if XnView will see it and it will NOT see it.

But if you want the program still just get the "XnView v1.82.4 Complete version (Plugins & NConvert)" because it has everything in it.
Will not help you on the .art files but it does still support a whole lot of formats.

IE was recently patched so it won't open ART files, if you can find a computer that hasn't been updated in 6 months or so it should open them. You'll have to look it on MS site as to exactly when it was patched. Apparently there was a vulnerability in the ART format.

Art is a propietary format, there aren't many applications that will open them. Actually tere was only one I came across that I can remember, if you search this forum for ART you'll find the thread for the program. I can't remeber the name at the moment. It was a pay for program but did have a free trial.

Seems like I remember seeing ACDsee image viewer showing .art file as on of the formats it supports.

http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=acdsee

I have version 2.43 so it would have to be older.

Ok

File Extension Details for .ART

http://filext.com/detaillist.php?ext...&Search=Search

Read this here http://members.aol.com/oldnelly77/page5.htm

Graphic Workshop Professional supports .art (AOL / Johnson-Grace ART)

http://www.mindworkshop.com/alchemy/gwspro.html

Maybe that is where I seen it. I have on a zip Graphic Workshop that is old because it came out or I downloaded it before the Graphic Workshop Professional.
Had it on my old IBM with windows 95 and I copied the folder it installed to a zip to see if it works and it does. I can run it from the zip without install it again.
Ok I found the Graphic Workshop on my zip and opened it but it does not support the .art file but the pro version has many more formats.

It might not, because as the coalman said there were problems with that format. Plus, AOL gives you a hell of a time trying to cancel your subscription.

Good question, I believe AOL uses IE as it's backend so it may be patched in the AOL version as well. maybe you could undo the patch? Look the patch number up on the MS site then see if you can match it up in add/remove, make sure to check "show updates". If you find it uninstall it.

Can't say I know it will work or not. Make sure to reapply the update after you convert them.

This software does read the AOL.art files & easily converts them as I needed !!! Alot of other great options are installed into this also ! You can even use it for up to 45 days free then thereafter it will cost $50.00.
I know alot of people throughout the web who really needed this and I believe ACD stands to reel in some coin over this program because it's so easy to use and probably the only reader as of late for this particular conversion of which I needed.

Just so you know that's a old product they do have newer ones on the website, they should support that format. Do you by any chance know what happens when the trial period runs out on that download? It's shareware correct?

thecoalman

AS far as I know because I've been so busy converting w/out reading about the program it's supposed to be a free trial at first it was like a couple weeks then they flashed an offer for free trial for 45 days then I assume I must either buy it @ $50.00 or it shuts down ? As for now it is listed freeware for those 45 days.
thecoalman, I did notice all the other programs ACD has on that site aside of this one so I sort of figured they have been around a while ?
I scensed that you were somewhat concerned what happens when the free trial runs out ? May I ask , should I be wary of something before it runs out ? I just sort of figured it would shut down and force me to but it or uninstall it ?

Let me know..........
Thanks again ,
rams
