Scanner not working..
I keep getting a message saying something like "Cannot communicate with scanner, cannot open twain source". I've uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers/software so many times now so it can't be there.

I have two folders in the winnt folder; twain_32 and Twain32. There are lots of files in the first one and nothing in the second one. I found a suggestion online to copy TWUNK_16.exe and TWUNK_32.exe into this folder. Still doesn't work.

My scanner is a Canon LIDE 30, I'm using windows 2000 and the scanner is on the HCL list.(It's always worked before).

It is in the Device Manager under imaging, not Other. It's also in the Control Panel under Scanners and Cameras. I used the troubleshooting from there but so far nothing has worked.

Any suggestions please?

Try unplugging it from the computer, then reboot, then plug scanner back into box and see what happens. The same thing has happened to me with my HP scanner and that has worked for me. If it doesn't work I have no ideas left.

When the computer came back on I got a box saying it needed to install files and couldn't find them. There was a browse option and I tried several places including the Software CD and even searched my computer for the file they were looking for...in the system32 folder....to no avail. Thanks.

You might try going to ... http://www.usa.canon.com/opd/control...ortDropDownAct
and getting the latest Canon drivers/software package.

Are you using the Canon software to do the Scanning .. Or Windows XP Camera n Scanner Wizard ??

I have the latest drivers from their website. I tried those and the CD I got with the scanner. I tried using the software that came with it as well as importing the scanner into photoshop. I don't have windows xp so I'm not using a scanner wizard. I've got win2000. It couldn't find the twain source before but now since the last time I uninstalled it I cannot install the drivers or software at all. I just get the Found New Hardware box, it is looking for files that are nowhere to be found on my computer or CD.

Like Wimpy said .. alot has to do with the scanner being on and pluged in (or not) ..
During the installation or un-installing.

I'm a little confused here ... but I'd start with unplugging the Scanner ... un-installing everything associated with the Scanner ... and starting over.
But - I 'm assuming you've done that already.

Photoshop is too slow loading .. So I use the freeware Irfanview to run my HP scanner .. in case you're interested.

I'm not familiar w W2k.

If you haven’t dumped your recycle bin you might restore anything there you don’t definitely recognize as something you removed. If something was removed in an uninstall it is just gone. But if you removed something while messing with the files you might be able to restore what the computer is looking for.

You might also make note of the missing files and do a Google search for them. Hopefully the source will tell you where to put them.

The proper procedure for the twain and twunk files is to do a search and delete any files and folders you find in the Windows folder only. The scanner driver install will replace them if they are gone but will not overwrite them if they are there and corrupted. It appears you have other problems now to solve first though.

Sorry, I didn't realize I got an answer. I never get the notifications.

I have searched the net for the specific files and I cannot find them anywhere. They are not on the CD nor are they contained in the latest drivers.

I've uninstalled everything, including the program folder, still I am unable to install the scanner software/drivers.

I will try the search for the twain an twunk and delete to see if any change. Thanks.
