Question MS photoedit on Win ME
Can someone help me find an answer to a minor issue?

On Window ME system, I open a jpg file in Microsoft Photo Editor.

After editing the image, I click on File>Save As.

Next, the Save As dialog box appears, showing the filename of the image on the filename line, and the contents of the current folder in the box above the filename.

This box also shows the folders within the current folder.

Here is my problem: As soon as I click or doubleclick one of those folders to make it the current folder, the filename below is also changed to the folder name (replacing the filename that I wanted to keep using).

This does not happen on my Windows 98 SE computer.

Both computers use exactly the same "Photoed.exe" file.

Can anyone give me a clue about how I can fix this????

Thanks,
OldJoe

I just replaced my WINME computer, but I know exactly what you mean. (Its hard to describe ain't it LOL)
Before you change folders highlight the file name and hit CTL/C (copy). After you change folders click the file name and hit CTL/V (paste)

I had one further problem with save-as. The file always was sent to the folder TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES instead of the selected folder, and showed only in the search of that folder (not on the list) until the computer was restarted. I was amazed at all the photo's I found with a search *.JPG within the temp internet folder.

KnotBored,

Thanks for the suggestion for getting around the problem. Do you know where the cause of the problem might be? Is there a defective .dll file that can be replaced???

No I never did find a solution, and I liked the program enough to work around its faults.
Another problem I found, was editing and saving a photo compressed the original way too much by default. A 1500kb photo edited then SAVE compressed to 800kb by default, losing some detail.
I ALWAYS used save-as/ more/slider to the right to 90%/same filename/save.

Me, too. I always use 90%. Thanks for the tip.

I discovered that the cause for this is that somehow this incorrect PATH gets planted in the registry under the photo editor key. The fix for this is to apply the exact same registry fix that is used to correct the " 'Insufficient Memory' when printing photos" problem. If you are not familiar with that issue either, search the Microsoft Knowledge Base for the "insufficient memory", "Microsoft Photo Editor" page.

This problem has existed for over ten years. I can't imagine why they never fixed it.

OldJoe

Need the fix
I have been having the same problem - I found and changed the registry key value but something keeps overwriting it and changing it back to "Temporary Internet Files.'
I have not been able to locate the fix in the MS knowledge base. Would you mind explaining how to stop this really annoying bug? Thanks

Aeronaut,

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/241258/en-us

This link will take you to the microsoft knowledge base article that describes the fix that I referred to above. I have found that the fix works for both problems, but only for a short time. After the keys are deleted, they get replaced with defaults by the program, and you can then print what you were trying to print, or save a file where you wanted to. Your preferences also go back to defaults (jpg quality factor of 50)(measurements in inches)

But then later on, after you've done other activities, the faults will return, and I do not know of a fix for that part of this problem. I don't think microsoft knows, either. I just keep repeating the same fix when necessary.

Remember to always have a CURRENT backup copy of the registry ready anytime you intend to edit the registry. I've never needed to use it, but you never know.
