HELLO Everyone...I have a strange problem that just started out of nowhere..I hope someone can help. All of the sudden I cannot view or open any of my .art images! They have always opened in explorer and now all I get is the box with the "X" in it. I have gone to folder options and made sure that art images are still set to open in "ie" and they are...so what is going on?? Even when I came online I have now noticed "X's" where pictures should be...I have no problems with .jpg images or any other image just the .art ones and it just began! Any ideas anyone?? Thanks LLO

Did you recently drop AOL or remove any AOL related software from your computer? .art is an extension used by AOL for its own image compression format.

You can stop downloading .art files by turning off "graphic compression" in your AOL browser preferences. AOL browser should still be able to view them, in which case you could convert them to .jpg files.

This quote is from AOL. I don't know how it would pertain to Win 98. Did you do any updating?

On June 14th, 2006, Microsoft released a new patch to their Windows® operating systems to fix some known issues with the .art file format. The AOL® software uses the .art file format for some of the images used within the AOL software. Unfortunately, a side effect of this patch is these images will not render properly and will be displayed as a Red X.

AOL is aware of this situation and is currently building a software enhancement to correct the affected artwork files, however, this software enhancement will take several weeks to develop and deliver to AOL members. We appreciate your patience while we work to correct this issue.

The reason they no longer work is because MS removed that ability because of a vulnerability in the images, at least according to them.

There are very few programs that support .art, matter of fact practically none. A few here do: http://www.acdsee.com/

Download the trial and convert them to something normal like .jpg, as suggested above turn off the .art seeting in your AOL software.

THANKS GUYS!! Yes I did just recently update my internet explorer,,,that is definately the problem. No I don't have AOL,,I got these art images by downloading them...wallpapers etc. I am now going to go and see if I can convert them like you said. Thanks so much. I will let you know if it works!! Well I guess I am stuck..I tried to get the acdsee program but it is not for windows 98. I haven't been able to find anything else that will convert them. Does anyone know if anything will view them? I have so many photos and wallpapers etc. Things I may want to print out and now just because I updated Internet Explorer --I can't view them anymore. This stinks. Thanks for your help. LLO

Buck52 ...I am not sure if I can do that or not. No, I am using the original windows 98. I am so aggrevated by this...I have soooooooooo many art images and now cannot see them or use them,,,I have been searching but cannot find anything that will view them...or convert them. ugh!!

Try this...
Start>settings>control panel>add remove programs...scroll to Microsoft internet explorer 6 or whatever you updated to and click to highlite it then click add/remove then put a dot in restore previous and click OK

Thanks, I see now that I could just uninstall the update and restore it the way it was, but then my security won't be updated...I am still trying to find something to convert my images. I don't know what I am going to do. I might just delete them all,,,but I have alot of them!!

You can always reinstall the update... it's quite easy ... if you are willing to delete them I guess they are not to valuable to you anyway

Thanks everyone for all your help...this is what I ended up doing. I decided to uninstall the ie security update ---and now I have all of my art images back!! But I wanted to be able to keep them...So I decided to download Firefox browser. So I will use Firefox as my internet browser....from what I read it is somewhat more secure anyway and can be updated. So I will use that for the internet and I will keep my old version of Internet Explorer so that I can have my art images!!! Yeah I am glad...because they are sort of important to me. thanks everyone!!
