Is it possible for camera firmware to freeze?
Perhaps I'm just being daft, but my Pentax Optio S6 camera just locked up. It's completely unresponsive (I can't even turn it off without manually removing the battery). Furthermore, the orange AF (autofocus?) light is also stuck in the "on" state. I'm currently waiting for the battery to drain by its own accord.

Is this a "feature" common to other cameras as well? If so, how do you folks wrestle back control and resume shooting?

Remove the battery and leave it out for a day.

Most cameras don't freeze.....their "OS" is so simple, it would take some work to make one complex enough to freeze, though it also depends on their condition. Parts inside it may be damaged.

I have a Fuji FinePix that does that on rare occasions.

When it freezes, it does not react to any buttons pressed, including power off.

Taking out the batteries for a minute or two always fixes it.
