Smile Solved: Digital Imaging
I have Corel Paint Shop Pro X image editing software. When I crop a picture and place it on a cd, the picture is smaller than one that I haven't cropped. How do I crop a picture or even save a picture that I can print out at sizes larger than a 4x6?

Welcome to the TSG forum.

Any time you Crop (cut off parts) the pic will get smaller.

You can print any picture at any size … but the question is …
Are there enough pixels left for a descent quality print at the physical size you want.

For example … to print a 4x6 at 100 DPI (dots per inch) minimum …
the picture will need to be bigger than 400x600 pixels in overall size.

What’s your picture’s overall Pixel sizes ??

When placing on a CD … you want to save it as a high quality format.
What format are you saving them in ?

I am new to the image editing procedures, how do I determine the amount of pixels and if I have enough to print large size prints. Also, I just got Roxio and I've only burned a cd once with it. I can't remember choosing the format on that. Do you know when it asks or do you have any suggestions on using it?

There should be a way in PSP10 to see the Image size… In total pixels.
It’s not how you save to the CD .. But how you saved the edited image to be sent to the CD in your computer first.

PSP10 is a really good editor .. But I use something else for my “Power” editing.
PSP10 is probably overkill for most everyday Image editing applications and will run slow if you use it as your systems default viewer.

Since you said “new to editing” … and if you only have/use PSP10 and M$ Image programs …
Can I point you to some Freeware that is very popular here at TSG.

This is a very fast replacement for M$ Image and Fax viewer .. That can also perform everyday editing chores … and file saving tasks .. like we’re talking about here.
No sense in having two programs just because M$ didn’t provide a good one to start with.

If your interested .. Then we can all talk the same language .. and use Irfanview.
http://www.irfanview.com/ … you only need the ~1MB program and not the All plugins (for now)

Your choice .. Do you want to wait on a PSP10 expert ??
Or are you interested in trying a really good program for everyday Viewing and Editing Chores ?? .. For free

If you save your images to CD as regular data you will not modify the image in any way by copying it to CD. You are somehow making the image small in PSP.

I also use Irfanview as my default viewer, but it isn’t nearly as good a tool for what you are doing as PSP.

Select the crop tool. Click on “Presets” and select a standard print size. In the first example I selected 8 X 10 horizontal. You can also put any size in the width and height boxes if you don’t want a standard print size.

The crop box will maintain the proper proportions for your print. As you adjust your crop box the way you want it you will notice the resolution will change according to the size of the box. That tells you what quality print you can get. In the first screenshot my resolution for the particular 8 X 10 crop ended up as 252.16 pixels/inch. You will notice that changes as you resize the crop box.

I find you get a pretty good print at 150 PPI and I can’t see any improvement over about 240 PPI regardless of whether I use a photo printer or print commercially. With a little work in the image editor I have printed 120 PPI images that looked decent, but more resolution would give better prints. Some subject matter requires higher resolutions and prints that will not be viewed up close can have lower resolution. You need to learn to relate your requirements to the listed resolution.

The second attachment shows another way to use the crop tool. The boxes are showing the actual pixels in the crop area. The reason I show it is that the resolution shown in this display is meaningless and should be ignored. Many people are confused by this default resolution. The resolution is meaningless until you set a print size.

Always save the original. You can also save modified and cropped images, but the original is your digital negative. If you are putting images on a CD to take to be printed you want them cropped to the proper proportions. But if you want to crop to a different size you should revert back to the original.
