PC to SD transfer card query
I was wondering if anyone knows why my camera can't 'see' pictures that I've transferred to my SD card from my PC.

If I put the card back into the card reader the PC can see them but the camera can't when it's in the camera.

PC: Win XP
Camera: Panasonic DMC FX8

On the card, there is a folder structure. Are you copying the pics to the proper folder? The camera will only see photos that are in (I believe this is correct for the Panasonic) a folder named 100_PANA to 999_PANA, that are subfolders under DCIM.
Also, the card would of had to be formatted by the camera.

The image will need to be in the correct "subfolder" on the SD card and have the expected camera attributes.

Some cameras also have a secodary "thumbnail" file that may be required.

Reverse-loading works on many, but not all cameras.

The files must also have a standard FAT16 file name. Eight characters and no spaces. My Panasonic will view files with standard Panasonic file names like P1000947.jpg and will also view file names from other cameras like CIMG2755.jpg. It will not let you view images with file names like Mary & Bob.jpg.

My Panasonic nor any of my other cameras require you to keep the EXIF with the file, but I have read that some cameras do.

Thanks everyone for the advice
I've just tried again and the folders that appear are DCIM and MISC. I tried changing the name to eight digits, no spaces and tried both the DCIM folder and the MISC folder with no joy.

I then tried again but with a picture already on the card which then brought up the file 102-PANA subfolder in DCIM. I put another pic in there from my PC and although the camera now registers that there are 2 pics saved, the one from the PC unfortunately comes up as a black screen.

So close! I thought I had it there!

If you “changed” the file name to 8 digits it means you are dealing with an image you have messed with. Find an image you downloaded that is still in the original form with the original filename just like you took it from the camera. Upload it into the 102 PANA folder.

If it displays then you have to figure out whether you are stripping the EXIF, not using a file name acceptable to the camera, etc.

Oh, I see. I don't have any older pics that I haven't renamed. The original reason for asking is that I wanted to put some family pics back on the card to take round to someone elses computer. I'll have to put them on a disc instead.

Thanks for your help everyone.

You don't have to be able to see them on the camera for another computer to see them. They do not need to be in a folder to see them on a computer.
