Fax Machines
I'm not sure if this is the right forum to be asking this questions, but I'm looking for a dedicated fax machine for a non profit organization. I'm totally on the out on fax machines, but would like some recommendations. Price should be in the 150 to 300 dollar range. Thank-you!

What is the volume (and frequency) of faxes likely to be?

The reason I ask is that this would determine if a thermal paper, inkjet or laser would be required.

If you chose an inkjet and very few faxes were received, the cartridges tend to get eaten up in auto-clean cycles in some units (Brother as an example).

If the faxes are frequent a low end laser fax may be best, but without some detail, its "how long is a piece of string".

Aloha Kiwiguy

It's a fairly busy office and I was think more in the line of a laser fax machine. It is a non profit that grants "wishes" to sick children, much like Make A wish Foundation. Here's a link,

Our island has a little over 100,000 fulltime residents. Although I think the volumne maybe about 5 to 10 faxes a day.

Thanks for responding, I'm planning a RV trip to New Zealand, hope in our winter!

This type of machine would be my recommendation.

The reason is that every toner gives a new drum as well, the cheaper ones do not also include a drum have a limited drum life and a new drum can often be a significant portion of the original cost.

In this manner the unit should last many years.

Just remember when you visit, we drive on the left here! People are killed in droves when hiring vehicles, where the steering wheel is on the other side! You will enjoy the country though.

Another option is using your computer as a Fax, you can store the faxes on your computer as an image, and it will print to your regular printer. Faxes arrive into an INBOX, and you can fax any document on your computer.

A benifit can be not wasting paper if you get junk faxes (only print what you want), although the fax can be set to print directly on arrival to your default printer if you wish.

You will of course need a fax modem but they are very cheap and often come installed on computers.

I have been down that route and don't advise it though.

That means the PC has to be fully on and running 24/7, anytime it is out of service there is no fax, they are not even collected. The power cost alone is a consideration, about 140 watts vs just a few watts standby for the dedicated fax.

The time involved in faxing multi-page documents is high, most "scanners" have no document feed and those that do probably cost more than the type of unit suggested.

Just just another option to consider depending on use, it can save you alot of time if you are faxing documents directly from the computer as opposed to Printing them on the printer and then Faxing. Some people don't shut their computers down anyways so not sure about the Hydro cost factor.

either way it is just good to know you can do that, just search XP help if you want to set it up
