What do you consider cheap?

Personally I dont think that you can beat Epson photo edition printers they certainly do the job for me, people can only really comment on what they have used of course,I have also seen outstanding photos done on Lexmarks but Ive always used Epsons because the ink refills are much cheaper and they do the job well enough to satisfy me ...I suppose at the end of the day you get what you pay for,but Ive never been able to afford really expensive printers to be able to compare ...

Most of the printers are cheap now, its the cost of the ink thats expensive.

If you plan on printing a lot of pictures, check on the cost of the replacement ink cartridges.

i would by a dye-sub printer - I think they are the best .
I have a Hi-Touch 730PS - prints out 6x4, 7x5 and 8x6 - and it works first time everytime for my photos
I also had a canon inkjet, HP inkjet and still prefer the dye-sub, only draw back is 8x6 is the biggest size - so i have to use the inkjests if i want A4 size - but rarely do these days

I have two HP pprinters that give acceptable photo's for my occasional use. I can make another copy as they fade, and I can resize as needed to fit various frames.
but
Printing at home is a convenience, not to get professional quality pictures. It is cheaper to take a disk or a flash drive of photo's I have enhanced with software to a photo studio or a convenience store (Cosco) and have them printed on their multi-zillion dollar printers and professional paper and ink.

If you need the larger sizes of an inkjet you want a 6+ color printer with photo cyan and magenta. Those aren’t very good for text but you say the printer is for photos only.

Your best buy would probably be an Epson R260. If your secret location is in the US you can get one online for $82 delivered price. The Epson R380 has a card reader and more bells and whistles for around $122 delivered from a reliable online seller.
