Please I need help! Virus possibly
I have had a problem with a photogallery installation coming up when I try to open folders on my computer..only SOMETIMES though. It use to be when I started my computer up but I read another thread somewhere on here with the same problem and it told to go to the msgonfig thing and uncheck the photo software. So I did that..and I thought the problem was solved. Except now the "photogallery" installation comes up when I open folders and especially when I go to the "my computer" folder. It only does this (most of the time) when my computer has been on for a while. Then when I end it in the task manager..it will close any program I have open plus it will get rid of the desktop and I have to manually start it by re-doing the task "explorer.exe" Any help at all?

If you suspect a virus run a virus scan. If you don’t have current definitions do an online scan.

This site will find all sorts of adware stuff that isn’t important and want you to pay to remove it. But it will identify any real trojans and viruses on your computer. If you do have a virus or trojan you can Google it and find sites to tell you how to clean it out manually. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

I would guess you are referring to the Windows Photo Gallery in Vista. Your first step would go to Windows update and make sure Vista is up to date. I would think any updates to the Photo Gallery would be offered as an option after the critical updates. In Internet Explorer, Help > Online Support will take you to the Microsoft support pages.

I don’t use Vista so I haven’t figured out how to disable the Photo Gallery so it doesn’t interfere with my using better viewers and editors. Someone here probably knows how. Maybe just making a “Photo” folder directly under your C drive and moving your pictures there would work. There are directions on the Microsoft Vista site for removing folders from Photo Gallery without deleting them from the computer. Maybe just taking the folders away would solve the problem of the thing opening when you don’t want it: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...a2ef41033.mspx

What then is “photogallery” and where did you get it. If it is a program you installed I would think the obvious solution is to uninstall it and get something that works. Tell us what it does and we can probably recommend some freeware that does a good job.

Housecall asks for money to remove the things it found, but it gives you a list of everything if found for free. And it differentiates between adware and real viruses and trojans. Don’t click on “Remove” and read the list. There are detailed instructions online for removing the real threats for free.

I would start a thread with the Hijack This log on “Other Software”.

If you don’t have anti-virus software on your computer you might look into the free AVG program. It updates the definitions and is good. I put it on a friend’s computer and it seems to do a good job. http://www.grisoft.com/doc/products-...-free-edition/ You might also consider the free version of Adaware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/...67032f69e4cb10 Some prefer Spybot Search and Destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

From your first post and very limited feedback it seems to me you have a misbehaving program. A virus can cause odd behavior but it doesn’t sound like that is your problem. Since you don’t seem to want to share the Housecall results it is senseless to try to go there anyway.

When you have a program open there is usually a colored band across the top of the screen. On the far right of that colored band is a minus, a box and an X. On the left side of that band is the name of the program. It might have an album or picture name first, but the program name should be there. Tell us what it says in the far upper left of your screen when photoalbum is open.

number one..what are "housecall" results. It's not like i didn't want to share them..whatever they are..I have no idea what you are even talking about so let me know what they are and i will give them to you.

And which are you talking about..what do you mean want the name of..the photo album? if you are talking about the thing I open and the "photogallery installer" comes up..It's EVERY folder on my computer that I try to open. Do I need to give every single folder name?

but if you are talking about the photo gallery thing (which i do not think it just a misbehaving program) it comes up and you CANT either minimize maximize or close..its on there and i have to manually close it by pushing ctrl alt and delete then ending the process.

I have given all this info somewhere before. I am not trying to be mean if I sound like it. I just don't like that you are saying I'm leaving limited feedback and not wanting to share certain things with you

thanks!

heres the shot... dont mind the big black marks..i was just respecting my families privacy since there were pictures of them in there

it will go to the end of that..then go to a page saying it needs a cd rom..and i have NO installed any kind of photo editing software so it should not be happening

and when i click cancel it the status bar just goes down..THEN back up and repeats the process

The title of this thread suggests you think you have a virus. In my first reply I provided a link to Housecall I looked up for you. You said you had scanned and they wanted you to pay. In my second post I explained that you get the full Housecall results free and you only have to pay to have them remove what they found. In your last post you said you had never heard of Housecall.

I understand your frustration but you must understand that information you gave before on other sites or threads doesn’t help us here. And skimming posts people research for you hoping for a magic bullet and ignoring anything that might involve effort isn’t likely to find a solution.

I think I finally found a reference to your problem. If you bought HP equipment and installed ImageZone. It wants to install the ImageZone Photogallery. There are several solutions that work to avoid getting the installation message:

Install Photogallery. Put the HP CD in the drive and install Photogallery. If there isn’t a specific install for it on the CD just get out of the opening screen and go about your computing with the HP CD still in the drive. Evidently the installation will find it on the CD when the box appears. If you have HP equipment and don’t still have the CD you can download the latest ImageZone from HP. You have to search the HP support download site using your HP equipment model number.

Uninstall ImageZone. Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

Start > Run, type MSCONFIG and OK
Go to the Startup tab and uncheck anything that might involve ImageZone.
Reboot.
Not to worry if you uncheck something your HP equipment needs – it is easy enough to recheck it.
You will get a message box the first time you reboot saying you changed the startup configuration. Check the box to not show the message again and OK.
You will still have ImageZone and can use it, it just won’t start anything when you boot.
