Unhappy 1 GB XD CARD vs SANDISK IMAGEMATE - not reading!
Help!

I just returned from my vacation in Hilton Head, SC. It didnt start out so well, because I forgot my picture card for my camera - Olympus C-5000. I went to Staples and bought a 1 GB XD Picture Card.

When I put it in the camera, I formatted it. It worked fine the entire vacation.

I just put the XD card in my Sandisk Imagemate (model SDDR-95), and it wont work! I'm getting an error: "Device not ready". It works with the other, smaller XD cards that I have.

I'm guessing from what I have read this morning that this reader does not like this size of picture card. How do I get my photos? I cant find the cord that connects the camera directly to the PC.

Is there a driver upgrade for the Sandisk card reader? Do I have to take the card to a camera store? What do I do! I cant wait to share my pictures

My computer is on Windows XP, and the software I use to transfer the images to my PC is Camedia Master (came with the Olympus).

Thanks in advance.

I looked on the Sandisk site and they have only a Win98SE driver. Other systems do not require drivers. I saw no patches and such.

I take it you are referring to the capacity and not the physical size of the card. 1 Gb shouldn’t be a problem in any USB 2.0 card reader like yours. And this site says a 1Gb card is compatible with your camera: http://www.memorydepot.com/details.asp?id=SFL-1G%2FXD You can’t use the panorama function if you didn’t get an Olympus card, but otherwise any 1 Gb card should be fully compatible.

Usually anything 2 Gb and under isn’t a problem. Above that requires a different FAT system.

With the card in the reader go to My Computer. The reader should be listed as a separate drive letter. Click on it and see if you can get to your photos bypassing Camedia. If you can’t see them try messing with the card in the slot to see if you can get them to show.

There really isn’t any reason I can think of that a 1 Gb card that works in your camera won’t work in the reader.

Hi Slipe:

Thank you for your insight.

I went to MY COMPUTER, and then the drive.

The message that popped up said "The disk in drive L: is not formatted. Would you like to format it now?"

I'm guessing I dont want to do that, as I'll lose all my photos! That would be devastating

The 1 GB card is probably Type M or Type H. Not all older card readers can read these type of cards.
Can you view the pics in the camera?
If so, try another reader or find(buy) the usb cable.

Yes, the card works fine in the camera, all photos viewable just fine.

I havent had this card reader very long, 1-2 years?

Your reader was first on the market about March, 2003. The Type H card didn't come out until November, 2005.
Card readers will say if they are compatible with Type M and Type H xd cards.
Just be careful, lots of posts about people losing pictures because the reader wasn't compatable with Type H cards.

Moper is right. I looked up your 2003 camera and it is type M & H compatible. The card must be type M or H to reach one Gig. Oly must have anticipated the type sooner than Sandisk.

You are correct that you don’t want to format the card. Evidently the reader is seeing the card but can’t read the file system. You might try the demo version of ZAR – considered freeware by them. http://www.z-a-recovery.com/download.htm

But if you want to continue using the card you need a way to read it without having to use recovery software. If you can’t find the cable you will have to stay with the lower size or buy a new card reader. If you are going to do that you might as well wait. You can get one online for $20 delivered.

This is so frustrating. ZAR found "0 files in 0 directories." That makes no sense. The pictures are on that disk!

Guess I have to try and find a camera cord

I really appreciate everyone's suggestions. Thank you so much.

well I've got one for you
I have an Olympus FE-230, and an iMac. My computer has always been able to connect to the computer, etc.

Now, it can't FIND the folder with the pictures, with the usb. I can see everything FINE in the camera, it just won't come out of my camera. I also tried sticking it into my printer "card read error"

any help please? These pictures are important

I have a Fuji camera and a Kodak, they use different cards an XD and an SD. I had to buy a 5 in one cardreader,(29 $$) because not too many readers read an XD card. If you have a 3in1 or 4 in1 cardreader, you need one that specifically read XD cards.

We bought 4 of the Sandisk card readers and 3 crapped out within a month and the 4th didn't work straight out of the package...

I just found it. After finding the problem myself (a little different) I found a solution that may work.

I have a SanDisk card that is read fine, I bought a 1GB and it couldn't read the card at all.

On my 2nd lap around SanDisk site I came across this page:
http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1562

It's a firmware upgrade. It solved my problem, hopefully will solve yours.
