Solved: viewing photos
I recently got a new computer with windows XP home edition having previously had windows 98. I just tried looking at a CD full of photos and thought that windows XP had a built in slide show feature but cannot find it so am laboriously having to open one at a time. I did have Irfan on my previous computer but would like to find the windows version if possible. Can you advise me on what to do.

Hi Nita
Heres how.
Microsoft Windows XP has a built-in slide show that you should be able to turn on with just a few clicks. To get started, open whatever folder has the pictures you want to display, close any Windows Explorer bar (such as the Folders pane) that may be open over the task pane, and then, in the task pane under Picture Tasks, just click "View as a slide show." That's pretty much all there is to it.

If you can't find the "View as slide show" tool, here's a possible fix. Go to the Control Panel, double-click the Folder Options dialog box, then click the General tab. Now, change XP's default to "Show common tasks in folders." Click OK and try it again. To revert to your original folder settings, just reverse the process.

Once you get the slide show going, the images will advance automatically every 5 seconds. You can back up or advance slides using the left or right arrow key on your keyboard, but Windows will continue its 5-second updates unless you pause the slide show. Although you can move your mouse pointer to the upper right corner of the screen to make the slide show toolbar, which has a Pause button, appear, it's far easier to just tap the space bar to both pause and play the slide show. When paused, you can use the left and right arrow keys (or the up and down arrow keys, or even Page Up and Page Down) to go through the slides at your own pace--which is great if you're trying to narrate your slide show. Use Ctrl-K or Ctrl-L to rotate the current image 90 degrees clockwise or counter-clockwise, if necessary. And while you can also use the slide show toolbar to end the slide show, using the Esc key is faster.

Want to have a musical soundtrack? XP's slide show doesn't let you add sound, but that's okay; you can just start the music before you launch the show. Open Windows Media Player or whatever music software you use, start a playlist, and then get the slide show rolling. The music will play in the background.
Good luck Norman

I have done that. I click on slide show but nothing happens. In the dialog box underneath slide show it has a paler text which says using Windows picture and faxviewer. Windows picture and fax viewer does not appear in my list of programs and does not come up in any search.

Right click on a photo file like a jpg. Select “Open With”. If the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer isn’t a choice it isn’t on your computer for some reason.

If it really isn’t on your computer try Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components.

If you can't open pictures on the CD, your problem is not "solved," it is only ignored. Windows should have no issue with opening pictures on just about any medium it can read.

I could open the pictures from the CD but it was very laborious one at a time. No thumbnail sheet and no slide show so I m happy that I have found a way round it. If you come up with something else please let me know

Something else? you said you tried IrfanView and that you wanted something already in WinXP. But IrfanView is the "something else" in fact, it is SOMETHING ELSE!

With IrfanView, all you need to do is get to the folder (on a CD/DVD, a hard drive, a flashdrive, whatever) and look at one picture (almost any format), then by just pressing the <Space> bar will quickly open the next. You'll be able to view the pictures almost as quick as you press the space bar. If you go past one picture, you can backup to the previous by pressing the <Backspace> key. Pretty easy.

To get to the folder you can use Windows Explorer, then drag the picture right into an open IrfanView window, or even the icon.

You don't even need to install IrfanView. Yes, the .EXE file does install it, but you can open that installation file and just pull out the "i_view32.exe" file and just use that. It does not have to be "installed" to use for most of the common functions.

As for what is already in WinXP, there is the "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer". Just do a right click of a picture in some folder of pictures, and you should see "Open With." There you should see the selection for "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer"
Once you see that one picture, all you need to do is <right arrow> to the next picture. (Or <left arrow> for the previous picture.) There is no problem with having to "laboriously" open one picture at a time.

I switch to Full Screen viewing mode in Irfanview .. (2 Click on an Image) ...
Then use my Right or Left mouse key to do a "manual" slide show.
The Center Mouse key (push on the scroll wheel) will return you to the normal viewing mode.

Another thing you might like in Irfanview is to open one of the images on the CD and hit the T key. It will make thumbnails of the entire folder or CD. You can then double click any thumbnail and have it open full sized.
