Help with Photoshop???
Hi Guys!

I am a very basic user of Photoshop 7 and wanted to know how can we extract a part of a picture. Sat for example I want to extract my picture from one of my prevailing photos and paste it on some other background, how can that be achieved. I tried tools like Magic Lasso, Magnatic Lasso etc and even appled the feather feature, but even then when I paste it on some other background, any one can make it out. The most difficult part is with hairs. I am attaching some pictures which I randomly found on net. Please guide me as to how can I exrtact them from their present backgroung and paste them to a new one without anyone coming to know about it.

Pleae also guide me if there is any better tool or software to do this other than Photoshop.

I find the best tool extracting image is the extract tool (followed the history brush). But with all that hair regardless of the method it is going to be one very tedious and time consuming job

Everybody has problems with hair. If you are downloading a photo from the internet and hope to select out loose hair forget it or accept what you can get. Between sharpening artifacts, JPG artifacts and low resolution Photoshop has nothing to work with separating the hairs. You can do a little better finding the channel with the most contrast for the selection, but Photoshop isn’t going to be able to select out individual hairs in limited resolution and with artifacts.

If you are taking the photos yourself it is a different matter. If you plan to put the model in a different background shoot with a solid light color for the background. Shoot in raw with the highest resolution camera you can find. Make sure absolutely no sharpening is done on the raw image either in conversion or in processing (edit: not before selecting the hair). Don’t use any feather. Photoshop will select out the image fine with Select > Color Range or Magic Wand with “contiguous” unchecked. Both need fiddling with settings and probably work better in a specific channel.

This page has specific hair selection tutorials that might give you some ideas: http://photoshop-tips-swicki.eurekster.com/select+hair/

Ca you please tell me where is this extract tool and how do we use it followed by history brush. As for the hairs, I do understand that its a very tedious job. The pictures included are just examples and the snaps taken by me aren't so messy. Its my family pictures and much simpler than the one I have included. I just included them thinking that if these pictures can be done with, any one can be.
