Splitting images
I had some of my pictures scanned to JPG files. Each time they were scanned, four pictures were on the scanner. Now I have files that are 3000x4800 and I need to split them up into four separate 1500x2400 sized files. MS Paint doesn't let you select an area bigger than the screen so I can't use that and that's about as far as my expertise goes. Anyone have another suggestion?

The freeware Irfanview will do that for you.

Open the image and just drag a box around one of the images. The crop tool is always active in Irfanview. I would blow up that part a little so you can get it exact. If you don’t drag the box perfectly you can put the cursor on an edge of the crop until you get the double arrow and fine tune the crop.

Once the crop is exactly where you want it, Edit > Crop selection.

File> Save as. Name it and select a file type.

Open the original again and do it to the next image.

When installing Irfanview I would select “Images Only” in the file associations. Once you get the program running, View > Display options > Fit image to window. Once the image is open all four will be on the screen. You can hit the plus key on the numeric keyboard to get it so one of the images is about filling the screen so you can crop it more accurately.

Gimp is another good choice. http://www.gimp.org/
Many Photoshop-like features.
