photos on my dvd/tv
After a wonderfull visit to Prague for my 60th birthday, a friend gave me a DVD of all the photos he took on our trip. I have loaded them ok into my pc and they show just great. On taking the DVD to my DVD player hoping to show then through the tv as i have done with some others photographs in the past, the file comes up ok, and the photos are numbered, but a big cross comes up in each box, not the picture. Is there any way i can change the information on the DVD to get it to work, or should i make a new copy from the pictures stored on my pc. (XP)
Does anyone have suggestion for the best burner that is compatapble with mos tDVD players.
I have Nero, and access to another preloaded burn system)
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

Happy Birthday

Here is an explanantion from DVD-FAQ that may help. If purchased in the Czech Republic your dvd is most likely the PAL format.

Video on a DVD is stored in digital format, but it's formatted for one of two mutually incompatible television systems: 525/60 (NTSC) or 625/50 (PAL/SECAM). Therefore, there are two kinds of DVDs: "NTSC DVDs" and "PAL DVDs." Some players only play NTSC discs, others play PAL and NTSC discs. Discs are also coded for different regions of the world (see 1.10). NTSC is the TV format used in Canada, Japan, Mexico, Philippines, Taiwan, United States, and other countries. PAL is the TV format used in most of Europe, most of Africa, China, India, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, North Korea, and other countries

I never tried but, I would think that if your PC software can read it you may as well try using nero to burn it in the NTSC format. If the dvd is copyright protected you will not be able to do the copy.

Hey cj... based on your description, I'm assuming this is a DVD-ROM with photos copied to it... in that case, since this isn't video, PAL/NTSC format concerns are irrelevant (they are also irrelevant with blank DVD's, because all DVD's are the same... it's the data written to them that determines their video type and region... but even then, that's only true with DVD "movies" and not with DVD-ROM discs). The photos are probably saved in a format your player doesn't recognize. It should be able to read JPEG's or similar generic types, but not all players will read all image formats. What type of files are they?

Hi,
They are JPEG and there is another reference on the file...CDFS

My DVD player should read JPEG ok, can't understand why it does not like this DVD with them on.

Maybe you have some suggestions ?

Some DVD players can only read standalone Jpeg files from a CD, unless they have been made into a picture slideshow of some sort, during which process the jpeg pictures/slideshow becomes a DVD video.
Confused?

yes and no.
I think the other DVD's that have played have been slide shows, so it makes sense, but i would appreciate suggestions of how to recopy in the correct way. Thanks.

I see you have Nero installed. What version number? Is it the full package also, including Nero Vision? If so then this can create the slideshow in DVD Video format and create the neccessary disc.
What burning software is on the other computer?
It's the ability to create DVD video that is important. Most basic burning packages can burn already created, or pre-rendered DVD Video to disc but cannot themselves create the DVD video format needed to view on a standalone player.
Can you post the make and model of your DVD player too so we can find out what it can actually play?

i think the DVD you have a data disc and this can only be played fine on your computer but on DVD player. It would be better to make all you photos into a slideshow and then burn to DVD. This DVD should be played well on your DVD player.

Try putting them on a CD-ROM instead of a DVD-ROM and see if it will read them that way. Practically all DVD players made in the last few years can open JPEG's so it could just be the type of disc.
