Unhappy Images not opening from CD
Hi everyone.
I need some help please. I have been looking through some family photos that are on CD, and some files aren't behaving at all.

It isn't all the photos that aren't opening, just some of them. They are all jpeg.

When Microsoft Photo Editor tries to open them a dialogue box appears that says 'can't determine type'.

When IrfanView tries to open it it tells me 'Drive/folder/filename.jpeg Can't read file header! Unknown file format or file not found'

I cannot copy them to HDD.

I have tried rebooting and retrying the disc in the drive several times.

Also, probably unrelated, but when I have been playing a music (bought) CD in WMP, when I remove it the icon etc doesn't update., like when I took the music CD out of the drive and first put the photo CD in and tried to open the photo CD, WMP opened up again looking for music. The only way I could change it was by reinstalling the CD/DVD rewriter.

I am expecting to be told not to expect to see those pictures again, but please please help.

Thanx in advance.

I would doubt you will see the pictures again. There is JPG repair software. It isn’t free and doesn’t seem to have a high success rate for corrupted files.

For the other part you can determine what opens when you insert what content into the CD drive. In My Computer right click the CD drive. Properties > AutoPlay > Pictures. Check “select and action to perform” and select Irfanview or whatever you want to use as your viewer. Apply and OK.

To avoid future problems you might want to download Nero Speed. It is free and will let you know how the recording speed you are using works out for error rate on the blank media you are using. Quite often a speed around half of the maximum speed gives a lower error rate. You don’t have to use it for each recording, just to find out what speed is optimum and perhaps whether you bought some poor blank media. http://www.cdspeed2000.com/

If your recording software does an integrity check use the feature. If you don’t have an integrity check with your recording software hewee says this still works: http://www.kvipu.com/CDCheck/ I used it back before software did its own integrity check and felt a lot better about my recordings’ integrity.

If I completely remove photos from my computer to CD I make two copies on different media and store them in different places.

I had a feeling that would be the answer. Thanx

For the other part, I don't think I made myself clear.
My CD drive won't forget what disc I have just removed from it.
If I play a music CD in the drive, then change to this photo CD, will still be looking for music.
The first disc inserted after boot up is always recognised correctly, but then won't recognise when the disc is changed.

Thanx for the links for the speed checkers

You did make yourself clear. I had hoped that setting the AutoPlay for the drive would cause it to open the proper program to handle specific file types. Evidently it didn’t work.
