Reduce size of Hp Scanner Software
Have XP and an HP Scanjet 4890 ... works fine but requires that software be on my C: drive
and it uses 'gobs' of space (almost 1 Gb).

Have uninstalled, then installed what HP calls the Basic Features software (which I think are just the drivers necessary) and the the 'Scan n Camera' windows XP application works
but the buttons on the scanner (scan to file, scan from film, scan to printer, and scan to email) don't work.

I reinstalled HP's premier software and the buttons work, but leaves me with little free space on my C:

Searched sizes and there are many many large cab files ... can I delete those?

Is there any other option?

The real answer is to get a larger HD, or maybe an external USB drive to store your files. This problem will continue until you delete some files or get more space.
As for the buttons on the scanner, they should all be accessible through software controls. I have never used any of the buttons on any scanner, as they can all be controlled through the scanning interface.

HughV - thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately, I didn't explain myself very well. I DO have another hd - plenty big - but the HP 'installer' insists (to the point of not giving me a choice) that the software go on the C: disk.

And as i mentioned, the buttons DO work with the HP software but NOT the 'scanner n camera' windows feature.

Do you already have all your documents and desktop account folders moved over to the larger hard drive to make more room on C:?

You can also reduce your System Restore reservation space, your Recyle Bin reservation space and your temporary internet files reservations space if you haven't already. I do that routinely on large hard drives because its a percentage and 12% of 250 gigs is WAAAY to much space to give to System Restore but even on a 40 gig drive it will save about 2.5 gigs of space if I reduce it to 5 or 6%.

Its a little bit more advanced but you can also move your pagefile to the larger hard drive which will free up another gig or two of space.

If the buttons don't work ...
What does it matter if you can scan from the computer using the Scanner n Camera wizard??
Personally .. I'd install the Basic Feature Software .. (2.8Mb) ..
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...5&swEnvOID=228
Which you probably tried earlier.

It really sounds like you need a bigger HD, but for another little more than an additional 1MB ..
you can install the freeware Irfanview ... (program only needed) .. http://www.irfanview.com/

It can run the scanner, edit the scans and a lot more ... probably eliminating the need of the scanner buttons even more.
It also make a very good default replacement for XP's Image n Fax Viewer.

This is how I run run HP my All-in-One printer and scanner.
