I use irfanview for my default image viewer it's quick and easy.

You can easily set irfanview to always open certain file types, it will ask you the question upon installation.

Generally you can right click on the file, select properties and then change the 'open with' setting. This varies from OS to OS but it's basically the same.

You'll need to have a another image viewer available to change it to, preferably not IE !

If you've already got Irfanview, press P, then the extensions tab, then the 'images only' button, finally "OK"

This will change the default viewer to Irfanview.

Then, there's the old fashioned way:
Open the program you want to use.
Navigate to the folder where the files are and open them.
This has the advantage of always working and avoids changing the default file association.
