Print Screen (Screenshots)
I'm trying to capture a screenshot from an .avi playing in Windows Media Player. I pause it, hit the "Prnt Scrn" key, and copy it over to Photoshop. However, the frame of the video is unmovable. It just sits in the center document. Why is this? Am I doing something wrong?

Under normal circumstances video cannot be captured the way you are attempting to. The avi is an overlay which means it isn't really part of the "screen" layer so print screen capture is ineffective. You either need special software that knows how to capture video or you need to turn video overlay completely off which will cause many side effects including possible non-playback so it might not work anyway, but you can try it.

What's some free software you'd recommend?

Cyberlink PowerDVD has a good screenprint extraction system, but the software is not free. But I imagine others do too.

Windows media player has an option to 'check' so print screen works. If you then paste the 'clipboard' to an open document in PhotoShop or just paste in Irfanview, you can now easily crop the image for the 'subject'.

If the GOM player can play it there's an option buried in the onscreen right click menu that you can set to burst capture (or just one frame) and grab up to 999 screenshots in adjustable intervals at one time.

If you need to capture more than just a screenshot of the video there was a link to a free version (one version older) of the TechSmith product for screen capture called SnagIt in these forums somewhere. It might still be available if you can find it.
