Solved: unable to upload images from camera
Hi,

I use to have no problem uploading pictures from my digital camera. Toshiba PDR-M700Camera is fine., sometihng not right in computer. Nothing appears in my "Scanners and Cameras" folder all of a sudden, when my camera folder used to be there. I tried reinstalling the driver from the camera cd and it says successfully completed but I still cant upload. Whenever I use ot upload, a window would appear asking me where I want hte images to go. I would click on Picasa and everytihng went fine. Now no window appears.
I have WIA started and automatic in Services.
Note: I also have some instances where I cnat see a picture on the internet. I only see a box with a red cross in the upper corner. I use to be able to right click and choose "show picture" but that option is no longer there. I mention this since I wondered if it has something ot do with the problem.
dell pc
winxp service pack 2
Thanks for any help!

With the USB cord plugged in can you see the camera in "my computer". It should appear as an extra drive icon of some sort. Double click the icon and see if you can access the pictures from there.

no camera in "my computer"
No, there isn't any icon or indication of the cmaera in "My Computer". It also doesn't show up in "Scanners and Cameras" wehre it used to be. I'm just owndering now if theres sometihng wrong with the usb port. I use the same port for my printer (of course one at a time) and I jsut went ot print sometihng and it said my printer is offline whne it is not. Its enabled and started in Services and the usb cable is plugged in and the printer is on. But I WAS able to use my printer this past week, yet I couldnt connect my camera to computer with the same usb port. Hope I made myself clear.

Have a look in "device manager" for anything with a yellow marker indicating a problem.

Yes I went to Device manager and I really feel screwed now. It said the usb port was not working (in the power tab). I went to troubleshoot and it told me to unistall the usb port and then go to "action" > scan for hardware changes, then it will reinstall. It did NOT reinstall. Now I haveo nly one usb port. The other is GONE! It then mentinoed to check in BIOS to see is usb is enabled. I doubt that its disabled since I never had the problem before. Can I get the usb port back? (Why on Earth would it say to do this if it wouldnt reinstall?)
I really need help now. I appreciate whatever you cna tell me.

Thank you. Yes, I realized this right after I wrote to you and it was reinstalled. so although the port works and I can use the printer, the original problem with the camera is still the issue. Ive tried everything I know. But this leads me to a bigger problem which I addressed in this forum but still have no solution.
The problem with not being able to upload pictures from digital camera began a few weeks ago when I suddenly was not able to use my desktop. My destop was not active. If I knew then what I knew now I may have avoided the problem. I googled a solution to set up another logon name. Later I found out that all I had to do was reset the window in "themes" to activate the desktop. After logging on with a different name I was able to use desktop. Everything seemed fine AS LONG AS I dont shut down the computer. When I do, and reboot, my desktop is practically frozen. I can get online but my start button and all other clicks become frozen. The only way to resolve tihs is to go to Safe Mode and reconfigure mscinfig. Then I can restart and everything is fine once agian BUT I have to reset all my Services every time I shut down which is a royal pain, very time consuming. I tried repair reinstall of Winxp which went ok but did not solve the problem. As I said, right now everything is fine (except for the camera issue and the 5 minutes delay for "My Computer" to open, as long as I keep the computer on 24/7). If I shut down the pc, I have to do the safe mode, restart and resetup of services all over again.
Do you have any ideas as to what the problem/solution is? I really would like to avoid a complete reinstallation of Winxp becasue I get very concerned about backing up all my documents and settings.
Sorry for the drawn-out details but I'm trying to be as clear as possible about the problem.

Reading some of your other threads it sounds like your computer is not very happy.

Making a backup of all your info is essential even with a healthy machine. So you need to do that now.

Then upload a HJT log to the malware removal forum.

I stumbled upon the answer. There's a folder in my ACDSee program (for photos) named Device Detector. I lcicked on that and the camera device was enabled.
