Solved: Will I lose same photos in Picasa if I remove ACDSee
Hi,
I have my photos in Picasa and ACDSee 3.1. The same photos are in both programs. When I upload my photos from my camera they go into Picasa. I then export them to ACDSee. The other day I was having a problem moving or copying files in ACD from one folder to another, so I went to ACD Maintenance Database to optimize it as Ive done many times. This time most of the items were missing in the left panel to optimize so I clicked on one of the 3 button next to it to see what’s there and to my horror it deleted everything under the word “root”. When I tried opening ACD it wouldn’t open. The information is still in my registry and the files are still listed in My Computer/ ACD folder. But I noticed that the program is no longer listed in Add/Remove Programs so Im assuming it was uninstalled. I tried reinstalling it with my CD of the program but it would say its updating the program. Hence I still cant open the program. When I tried to open the largest file, or any file in the program it said Windows can’t find the file.
If you have any solutions to this, that would be great.
My next possible solution would be to delete all the files in the program and reinstall with the CD to see if the program will reinstall fresh. BUT (and this is my main concern) if I delete the ACD files, will that in any way affect, or worse, delete my photos in Picasa since they are the same photos that I export to ACD every time I upload the photos from camera.

When you import photos using Picasa, they aren't actually stored "in" Picasa. They are stored on your hard drive and accessible outside of Picasa:

Where does Picasa store my photos?

Picasa does not actually store your photo files; it organizes the photos that are already stored on your computer by adding them to folders. To determine which locations Picasa monitors for photo files, go to the Picasa Folder Manager (select Tools > Folder Manager).
You can read more here. I'm not sure what's going on with ACDSee. What happens if you use Windows' search function to search for all photos on your computer?

Peace...

Hi,
When I use Windows Search to find my pictures theyre all there. But I noticed when I clicked on properties of a picture, up pops a window that says "Opens with ACDSee" Since ACDSee is not working I clicked on the Change button to Opens with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, Now all the pictures open with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. So now that I changed the program that opens all my pictures, is it safe to get rid of ACDSee files so I can try to reinstall it fresh?

"Getting rid of files" is a very dangerous occupation, you may need to use a registry cleaner -with full knowledge of what you are doing- to eliminate a partial uninstall of ACDSee.

As above, your programs are not stored in the program, but on the hard drive.

Please, whatever you do, backup all photos onto CD or DVD as data files before you touch anything. Hard drives are about the most unreliable long term storage, made worse when you start to play with registry cleaners.

I never had any trouble with ACDsee and I have used it from the start. I mean before they even had a web site and it was shareware on a image CD I got and I could pay if I wanted to stop the nag to buy it that popped up a couple times a month for $10.00 with life time upgrades.
But I like and still use the older Classic 2.x versions and have 2.43 now.
ACDSee or here ACDSee

You can if ACDsee is still on installed if it is not working try MyUninstaller
It is in a zip and you just unzip it to it's own folder and click on "myuninst" and it will run.
The MyUninstaller utility is a standalone executable. It doesn't require any installation process or additional DLL's. Just copy the executable file to any folder you want, and run it.

But it will show lots of info like where ACDsee uninstaller is at. Plus look for the "install.log" in the folder you installed ACDsee and you can get info from there.
I you use MyUninstaller and then highlight ACDsee you can right click and pick many things like "Open Entry in RegEdit" That only shows where the uninstall is at.
But it points to the Unwise.exe and also the install.log.
UninstallString
C:\PROGRA~1\ACDSEE32\UNWISE.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\ACDSEE32\INSTALL.LOG

Wonder if you did some cleanup that deleted you .tmp and .log files?

Hi,
I downloaded a trail version 2.43 to see if I then tried my purchased CD it would work. And it did. BUT I have to keep the CD in the cd player in order to use my ACDSee 3.1.
The trail version is useless since it tried to connect ot server and couldnt. I dont know what thats all about. So I went to Add/Remove programs to unistall the trial version and it cant becasue it cant find install.log file. Oh my god, the endless problems. Im ready to give up. I dont see any install.log files. Where are they if the trail version installed and is in my add/remove programs? I didnt touch anytihng.

Hi again, Just to clarify, No i dont need to keep the CD in the player but I keep getting this meesage to "Switch to" or "retry" which goes aways and then keeps coming back. Switch to what? Whne I clikc either, nothing happens except my start menu pops up.
I wonder if when the trail version is up, if I will still have my 3.1 version intact. Note: I did not see it before but my original 3.1 verson IS listed in add/remove programs 105MB. Oh, one more thing. I noticed that there are 8 different language folders in ACD. Do I need all these folders besdides English? Each language had the same named folders. I feel as though its just taking up unnecessary space.

I solved my own problem. Was just a shot. I downlaoded a trail version of ACDSee hoping it would install whatever was missing in my files. I was having trouble however unistalling the trail version. But I kept trying and it finally uninstalled. And whne I clicked on my ACDSEE icon the wizard popped up instead of my program and asked for the CD which I inserted and it ran and voila! my program is back. Wow, what a relief.

Glad you got things fixed. Sure never heard ACDsee giving trouble like you had.
