Paint Shop Pro X: layering
I have 2 questions:

1) I erased the background and am trying to layer the object onto another photo. When I Edit > copy, then - on the new bakgroound photo - Edit > paste, the whole thing comes along, including the greyed-out background.

2) I saved some MS clip art (fancy text), which I saved both in WORD 2007, .doc and in .pdf. How can I convert that to a .jpg or other compatible format? I have WindowsXP and MS 2007 Home Edition.
I want to layer that fancy text on top of the photo.

you try saving as a gif and then making the background transparent - then when you open and save as a layer it should be OK

to get to the clip art - is this just one image - you could save the word doc as html and it will save the image in a seperate directory

To save an image as a GIF file in Paint Shop Pro, open the image and then go to File>Export>GIF Optimizer.

To paste an image over another one, you will need to use either "Paste as New Layer" or "Paste as Transparent Selection".

word should have created a subdirectory usually the same name as the documnent but with 1_files added in there you should find a gif image of your clip art

I am working in WORD 2007, and there is no such thing as File > Export > GIF Optimizer; in fact, there is no such thing as "File"!

And I'm completely puzzled by this subdirectory with 1_files added ??

Re: pasting one image over the other: I HAVE clicked Copy on the one to be pasted, and then clicked Paste as Transparent Selection on the one to be the new background (in fact, I tried all the Paste options), but the one to be copied turns out humongous and moves around like quicksilver when my mouse comes near it.

When you create a web page HTML, the images are stored seperately.

When you save a Word document as an HTML file - Word will save the file and also in the same directory you save the word file, also create a sub-directory with the images in, so its compliant for web use

if you save the document as
test.html
then you would have a sub-directory called
test1_files
and in there should be a gif image of you clip art

  1. Create your WordArt in Word
  2. Save the Word Document as "Test.html" in your My Documents directory (Office Button (Office Logo on Top Left Hand corner)>Save As>Other Formats>Web Page (.html,.htm) (Select from the Files of Type box).
  3. Navigate to the folder Test_Files in My Documents and locate the image "image001.gif". That is your WordArt, which Word has already converted to GIF format for you, with the white areas transparent.

  4. Open your background image in Paint Shop Pro
  5. Open image001.gif (from your WordArt [above]) in Paint Shop Pro. Do not copy the file itself from the directory Test_files using CTRL+C
  6. Press CTRL+F6 till image001.gif is on top (ie., the file you can see)
  7. Press CTRL+A, CTRL+C to select and copy the contents of image001.gif
  8. Press CTRL+F6 (function key) to switch to your background image.
  9. Edit>Paste as Transparent Selection (Or Paste as new layer)
    1. Use your mouse cursor to position the pasted material to your liking by dragging it.
    2. Alternately, you could select an area in your background image where you want the wordart to go, and then Edit>Paste into selection.

Here's an extremely easy way for you to accomplish what you want to do, if you have Powerpoint 2007.
  1. Open Word and create a new instance of the WordArt you want.
  2. Select only the WordArt itself and press CTRL+C to copy it.
  3. Open Powerpoint 2007 (which I am assuming you have, if you have Office 2007)
  4. Select and remove (delete) all empty elements on the blank slide that is open by default.
  5. INSERT>PICTURE (navigate to the image you want as background, select it and click OPEN.
  6. Resize your background image with the grab handles till it fills the whole slide.
  7. Press CTRL+V to paste your previously copied WordArt on top of your background image.
  8. Resize and position to your liking using the grab handles.
  9. Press CTRL+A to select both elements (background image and WordArt).
  10. Right-click in the selected area and click Save as Picture
  11. Navigate to the folder where you want to save the image and then select your desired file type (the default is .PNG), and click SAVE.
  12. Open your image in any image editor and Hey Presto, there's your background image with your transparent WordArt.

Your step-by-step instructions are excellent. They didn't work exactly as you wrote, but close enough so I managed to make a wonderful birthday card for my granddaughter!

Just for your info (and my records), here is how I got to it:

your 3) becomes a .png extension;
open the testfile; right click; "open with" Paint Shop Pro X; size it by rolling the mouse roller; do the copy/paste as you say - et voila!

re your second e-mail - I have the Word 2007 home edition (no Powerpoint), but the copy/paste system works just fine.

So - many thanks!
