Photoshop CS3
Hi

I am really new to all this so if the subject has been covered I am sorry.

I want to enlage the subject matter of a photogragh that I have on my PC using Photoshop cs3 and then crop so that the finish size when it is taken on a memory card for developing will come out at 4 inches by 6 inches. I have tried various methods of using the crop to a specific size and on each occasion when I have tried to print it to see the results, I am informed that the picture is miles to big and when I do go ahead and print it comes out at A4 size.
How do I go about making a photograph the size I want?

Box Browine in deep do do???

Hi Box Brownie. Its a long time since I have heard the name, infact too long. Your problem with the sizeing!! Open up your picture in Photoshop..open IMAGE, drag down to Image size, rescale the doc.size box to your size ie inches, click the box, scale your size ie width and height, you'll find when you change your width the height follows, drop the resolution from say 300 to 180.Ok that ..save as ..then you can download that onto your cd ready for printing. Go to Image >> Image size >> and make sure the resample box is unchecked.
then type in the Width or Height you want.
You may have to use the Crop tool and crop to the aspect ratio you want.
You can do this before you resize as above... or after .. or both
As long as the resample box is unchecked .. You're Not changing the picture resolution.

When you use the Crop tool ... It's probably best to not have any resolution typed into the Crop toolbar.

Hi Poopdeck and Noyb

Thank you both for the info, I shall give it a spin and see what comes out. The thing I do not understand about this issue is why is there a box top left that indicates I can get what I need by using the settings there in?

Let's try this .. I'm using CS2 .. I think all the tools are in the same place.
Go to the crop tool .. 3rd down on the left.
In the crop tool bar - enter 4 x 6 (or 6 x 4) and do NOT type in a resolution.

Crop the picture to a 4x6 ratio ... and check back .. we're not done yet
Like this ...

Hi Noyb

What you have shown as an attachment is the bit I am questing and what I seem unable to get to function. Unfortunetely her in doors says its time for my Complan and liqudised marsh mallow before bed time. Perhaps we can resume tommorow on this subject and thanks for today.

One must obey .. She who must be obeyed

To use the crop tool .. you must click and drag a bounding box that will show the crop area.
It will stay in the ratio of 4x6 (or 6x4) as in this example.
You can grab the corners/edges and change the crop area to get the crop size you want.

If you type in a resolution .. It will resample the Picture ..
I don’t think you want to resample the picture at this time .. until you get this figured out.

Resampling the picture will change it - and you may loose the picture resolution.
We can wait till later for this resampling .. if needed.

Sounds like you’re about 4 hours ahead of me .. I’ll be on in the morning.

The crop tool should look something like this …
a picture of my former supervisors all dressed up ..

Hi Noyb

I hope I have it sorted. The size on print comes out at 6 x 4 which is what I want.

Thanks for the picture, I had a rummage around in the attic and came across all sorts of bits and bobs including my old box brownie which I thought had been dumped. I also found a box with two 8 mm wind up cini cams that my Dad had along with a development tank and projector. I am now trying to get the old projector working as there are loads of 8 mm cini film in cans that my Dad took years ago and I am keen to see them. Of course things where basic them days and you had to be a good potographer to get the best reults because you could not tweek things with a PC if you got the focus and adjusing for light factors wrong.
Take care
