Solved: Convert AVI to JPEG
I accidentally took a movie with my camera when I thought I was taking a photo. How can I capture the frames and convert to jpeg? Must I purchase software? I have a Canon Elph SD series. I can't find any info on conversion. I have a Mac, but I also have a PC with windows so that is not an issue. Thanks...Liz

All frames to jpeg? That'll be quite a lot!

29.97 frames a second of video.

Can't you just take snapshots of selected frames with something like Videolan player?

I guess I could according to your post, but I have never done this. I would like to capture a couple of good photos from the video. I didn't know that there were so many. I have never used avi and I haven't had the need to do a conversion. I went to your link and brought up the download and the manual. I don't have time to look at it now, but I will check it out this weekend. I know that Quicktime has a way to change avi to jpeg, but I would need to purchase it. This may be a one time deal so I don't want to invest in a program that I may never use again. Thank you for your advice. I will go with it on the weekend and hopefully I can figure it out. Liz

Its easy to do with VLC Media Player just by right-clicking on the screen and choosing Snapshot when what you want a picture of is on screen, the resulting picture will be saved in the My Pictures folder by default and in the png format which most photo programs will recognize.

You'll have best results capturing slow moving or static objects because although ~30 snapshots a second sounds like a lot, when compared to an average shutter stop speed, its slow, so don't expect great quality--just good enough to get by with in most cases.

The GOM player can actually be set up to capture 999 bitmap frames at a time from a video. This might be useful if you want to make a bunch of captures and then just choose the one you like best without having to try and get just the one "right" one on an individual basis.

In both cases the players can be made to capture natively in jpeg format but I'd recommend against that because the quality will be affected even more--capture in png or bmp (GOM) format, make your edits and then save as jpeg if need be.
