Kodak Z1012 IS - Problem recording HD video
I just purchased a Kodak Z1012 IS EasyShare camera. I am pleased with all functions except I cannot successfully record HD (720p) video. The video does record and playback accurately on the camera, but it doesn't play back properly on any outside source. When I try it on my computer the video plays very choppy and is at half speed or slower. The audio is accurate. I initially thought my SD card was the problem so I upgraded to a class 4 card and there is no change. All other video resolutions record and playback normally. I have tried to play this back using WM, Realplayer, and Quicktime and the video plays the same on all of them. I have also used 3 different computers including a brand new laptop with full HD capabilities, no difference between any of them. All of the software programs are fully up-to-date as well. Any ideas what I am doing wrong or what I can try to make this work?

Update:

I just found that if I take the SD card out of the camera and access the files directly from the card, they play normally. I would prefer being able to transfer them using EasyShare as it is a much quicker process. Any ideas why the videos don't transfer properly via EasyShare?

i'm not sure what easyshare maybe doing - but can you plug the SD card into the PC/Laptop - do you have a card reader - lots of new laptops have them now by default

then just copy and past from SD card to the harddrive and see if they work OK then - they will confirm that easy share is doing somethig

the comment its quicker on easyshare may mean its not copying the full data but changing its format

Remember data you do not have at least two copies of is data you do not care about.

Thanks! I have accessed the files directly from the SD card and they do work just fine. So it is an EasyShare problem. Now I just have to figure out how to fix that seeing I bought the EasyShare Dock just for the easy transfer benefits.

i have looked at the FAQ on the site and cant see anything on it - i suspect it cant handle the HD element
can you take video in normal mode and see if that transfers ok

Yes, videos taken with lower resolution settings work just fine after EasyShare transfer. I also couldn't find anything helpful on Kodak's site and after a quick internet search it appears they lack quite a bit when it comes to customer service and support. I suppose the dock will still be helpful in keeping my batteries charged and ready to go.

I have contacted Kodak support and they advised this is a codec problem with my computer and is not related to the transfer of files using EasyShare. They don't know what they are talking about, correct?

it may be a codec issue, unlikely since you can play the HD files off the card or directly copied to HD - But, did they say where you could download it from

They said to contact Compaq "to ask what I need". I searched the Compaq site and it appears I have the most updated versions of all programs and drivers. The codec stuff is above my knowledge base so I have no idea how to proceed regarding that.

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=27768019
at a photographic forum, see what you think
you may need to goto the start of the thread and then move through

when you transfer using easy share what does it open the video in - windows media player, quicktime etc
when you copy and open what does it use

When I transfer using EasyShare it just puts them into a file folder. They can play within the program without any outside programs opening (at least not that I am aware of). I have always copied them using EasyShare and then accessed the files manually. They open automatically in QuickTime, but I have attempted to open them using WMP and RealPlayer as well.

Hi raida,

The Kodak guys are right. It seem to be a codec problem. You must install "Combined Community Codec Pack" on your pc.

good luck!

An update...
Well, just an update...

I downloaded the most up-to-date versions of QuickTime and Easyshare a few weeks ago. I took a few videos, transferred them using Easyshare and they played without any problems. Today, I went to play a new video I just transferred and I had the same problems again. I couldn't even get it to play properly when copying directly from the SDHC card. I tried the VLC program mentioned in the forum linked above and it plays the videos without any problems. Hopefully, it too will continue to work.
