Camera connection not recognized by laptop
Hi,

Re: Canon Digital Power Shot SD850 IS camera
Laptop: Sony Vaio
OS: Vista
Anti-Virus: Norton 360 Premium
Camera's software: Canon ZoomBrowser EX

Until today I have never had a problem connecting my camera via USB cable to my laptop and transferring photos to my camera's software. Now, the camera is not recognized when connected to the laptop. The software itself is functional, however recently I had to download a Norton patch to once again permit use of the Canon ZoomBrowser EX software. This problem occured after I recently updated the Norton software. Do you think this is still a problem w/ Norton?

Please help!! Thanks very much.

With the camera connected, turned on and ready to transfer: Start > Computer. Under “Devices With Removable Storage” look for the camera or “Removable Disc”. If it is there you can transfer the files from the drive to any folder you choose.

If the camera is showing you might want to right click on it > Properties > AutoPlay > Pictures and check “Select an action to perform”. ZoomBrowser might be listed and you just lost the autoplay prompt. Select it, Apply and OK.

If it is there but ZoomBrowser isn’t listed as an action, the next best bet is probably to open the folder with Windows Explorer. Windows Explorer is better for transferring files than Computer. It is what I use rather than software to download my photos.

If it isn’t showing at all you might have a firewall problem. Or maybe a USB problem.

I use XP so I hope everything looks the same in Vista.

Laptop doesn't recognize camera connection
Thanks so much for your reply. The camera doesn't show up at all as a removable device when connected via the USB. I was able to transfer the new photos via the SD card, but I've always been able to use my camera. I too think it has something to do w/ Norton or the USB. I am able to charge my cell phone using the USB cable (not the same cable).

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated!

If you are using front USB ports try one in the back. That fix never worked for me but I’ve seen it often in manufacturer’s troubleshooting. Also if you are using a hub connect directly to a computer port instead.

That the USB is supplying power for a recharge doesn’t necessarily mean all is right with the USB. Right click Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager. Make sure there are no yellow exclamation marks beside USB. Those are XP directions – I hope they work for vista.

The Canon troubleshoot says to uninstall the camera from device manager if it is listed – perhaps under USB. You uninstall with a right click and menu. They also suggest you format the card. They suggest you should update Image Browser and uninstall and reinstall ZoomBrowser, but I don’t think you need either of those to view the camera as a drive. You might uninstall both and see if the camera shows up.

Something could be wrong with the USB cord or connectors. If you know anyone with a Canon you might try their cord. Try their computer while you are at it.

Talking Camera not recognized
Thanks again for your assistance. Much appreciated.

I checked the Device Manager today and there was a problem w/ the configuration for the camera. Using the installation CD for the camera I was able to correct the problem. Works fine now! If it ever happens again that's the first place I'll look.

Best regards.....
