Lens stabilizers have been around for quite a while, as the others have said. As far as I know, Nikon and Canon have been at it the longest. In the last few years, more camera manufacturers are concentrating on sensor-shift stabilization. Nikon and Canon are holding out though, in favor of the lens approach.
The problem I have is cost; a sensor-stabilized camera body is a onetime investment. You pay extra for each stabilized lens in the other approach. Normally I use a Pentax K20 (pre-ordered a K7!). It has sensor stabilization and can use every Pentax lens I've ever owned.
Be mindful of one thing: if you manage to combine a stabilized lens with a stablized body, turn one off! They don't play well together. The same can be true with a camera mounted on a tripod. The stabilizing circuitry doesn't quite know what to do about a steady body, so turn it off.
