Angry Solved: Jpg pictures getting corrupted
Not sure if this is a virus, a issue with the memory card, or card reader, or a software glitch.

Machine Specs:
Windows Vista
Dell inspiron Desktop
Norton Antivirus

Camera Specs:
Sony Cyber shot 8 mega pixel Camera
128mb memory card

Issue is when importing pictures from Camera to hard drive the pictures are fine. They show up correctly imported and not corrupted in the thumbnail view. When you go in and view them with Microsoft Picture Manager some get corrupted. This is also the case with Infranview.

If the card is placed back into the camera, pictures are viewed fine….unless it was physically opened on the desktop, it then will read File error when put back into the camera. I am able to format the memory card from the camera, but when I format from the desktop, I get an error that it cannot be formatted through the desktop.

At first glance we thought it was the memory card but now it seems strange that older pictures that were not corrupted before are now showing up distorted like the pictures we import. We tried to import them thru the card reader and thru a USB cable getting the same issue.

I have an up to date Norton installed (with patches) and ad aware removal. Both come up with no viruses.

We tried 2 different memory cards. We tried 2 different cameras and a XD memory card. Could this be a driver issue regarding the USB drivers? Or possible virus that has not been detected yet

Any thoughts would be much obliged

That the photos show normally in thumbnail view doesn’t mean they aren’t corrupted. Most cameras attach thumbnails to the photos, and if they are available they are used instead of generating thumbnails from the image.

I have no idea how one goes about formatting a card from the desktop. That is normally done with Vista’s “Computer” or Windows Explorer. I don’t use Vista much, so maybe it is a new feature for removable drives to show on the desktop.

Some people regularly download stuff to the desktop, but again I’m unfamiliar with opening stuff on the desktop. A photo usually has to be opened in a program. And unless you “Save” from the program, opening it shouldn’t affect the file at all. You usually have to Save and/or rename a file for it to not view in the camera if you put it back on the card.

Could you attach a corrupted file for us to look at?

Well yes we have opened the program with infranview and Microsoft Picture Manager. The location of the files were located on the desktop. I will try to attach a picture later tonight for you to look at

Believe the error that the card cannot be formatter (correctly) from the computer.
The Sony Cybershot camera is the only way to correctly format the card. I have two Sony Cybershot cameras, have only once had to format a card (out of 7 cards I have for them.) The cards are useable right out of the box, and I cut/paste from the card using a card reader. Is it possible your pictures were downloaded from the camera while the batteries were worn down? Another advantage of a $10 card reader is the camera batteries are not used durring download.

For a year or so ... I've been reading that this is a typical problem in Vista ??
Have you upgraded to Vista SP1 > SP2 yet ??

Seems that way to me.

Whether you search these forums or the internet, corrupted pics leads to Vista, majority of the time.

From what I'm seeing so far ...
This might be a better option than (?? upgrading ??) to Windows 7
