Image portability between gimp and photoshop
Ok, so I've been using gimp for like, 4 years now.
Also, I'm an aspiring graphic designer.
I'm now in school and am learning photoshop.

I would like to be able to transfer my files from gimp to photoshop.
That means being able to save my stuff in gimp, with layers, full color, and alpha channels saved too. The problem is, gimp seems only able to save transparency or layers, but never both, for any extension other than XCF. Even adobe's own .PS doesn't seem to be able to handle transparency and so asks me to flatten the image.

Is there a file format that does all I want and gimp can save as that I'm just missing, or maybe a plugin for photoshop that will read .XCF files?

Thanks in advance!

That's only when saving as a gif file .. Right ???

Saving as a psd file will preserve layers and transparency of any layer.
If your saving as a gif for web, or other purposes .. You also need to save the original psd working file.

No, not just GIF. GIMP doesn't save as PSD, either. It will save as a post-script (.PS) but it still asks me to flatten the image.

Sorry ... I'm not familiar with Gimp .. I started with PS.
I think I saw some Google chatter about batch processing from Gimp to PS.
Not sure how much got transferred.
I'm wondering about a multi layered tiff file ????

When saving a PS file to gif .. it will also ask to flatten layers .. if it has any

When Noyb means .PSD, he means Photo Shop Document format which contains layers, not .PS which is Post Script format for printing. Saving to the various formats should have been discussed early in your Photoshop class at school, but maybe your teacher has other priorities.

Google sez the GIMP can read .PSD and can also export to PSD too.

So try a Gimp forum and good luck.
