OS not able to view gifs!
I have Vista Basic x64 and I'm having trouble viewing GIF's I've downloaded. I checked in my default programs and for GIF Windows Photo Gallery is supposed to be the default program for it. But the icon for it in there that is that weird messed-up looking thing that always appears when the default icon doesn't appear.

Also I've attached a screen showing me trying to open it with the right-click context menu and "open with" menu. As you can see there are actually a few options, but if I click on Windows Photo Gallery it doesn't open up and I get an error message that says "so and so GIF is not a vaild win32 appllcation. It does open up with Paint though and many other things. I've also attached the actual GIF I was trying to open.

Also Windows Photo gallery does open on it's on just fine. I've also attached the most recent gif that I've been trying to open.

Any ideas?
Jan

use
choose program
select the program you want to use as default all the time and tick the box - always use this program and open

That doesn't do any good. It still won't open and I get that error message. Interesting thing too...I had deleted the file I'm talking about, but in recycle bin it was displayed, in Windows it does not.

Looks like "Windows Photo Gallery" is broken. Can you open it independently of images?

Actually I just found out that Windows Photo Gallery does not support GIFS and that I should set the default opening program to Internet Explorer, which I have done.

You've Got The Right Idea
Once in (PAINT) just file and (SAVE AS) a jpg.
Then most other programs will be able to open it
unless it is corrupted.

If the gif is animated or has transparency ... It's best to open it in Explorer.
Converting it to a jpeg .. or other format .. Will loose the animation or transparency.

Not Usually The Case
Respectfully that's not usually the case, once in a blue moon
the graphics get distorted, but it works for me on a regular basis,
without any distortions.

It can happen though I agree, but no matter - nothing to lose
if the file gets saved with a different name - just go back to the
original file and try another method.

Scott, Please Post a link to an example, as I don't believe I've ever been able to save an animated or transparent gif and have that translate into jpg properly. It's not that it is distorted, mind you, so much as the animation no longer works or the transparent area becomes "white" area.

"White" depends on the default background color of your Viewer.
I use Irfanview as my systems default Viewer .. and can change the default Background color.
It has no problem viewing Animated gif images .. (Beats anything made by M$)

Still ... Many times I have to open a gif in Explorer to see it as it will appear on the web...
Such as my Avatar.

Download my Avatar in any format other than a gif .. And you'll loose the animation.
It does not have transparency .. It does not like the snow with transparency .. so I faked it

Noyb:

"Download my Avatar in any format other than a gif .. And you'll loose the animation."

That was actually my point. Scott had said that he could save a jpeg WITH transparency AND/OR animation, and I do not believe this is true.

ypbass said "Respectfully that's not usually the case, once in a blue moon

without any distortions." He was referring to your post claiming that you'd lose transparency and animations. I was just, in a nice way, saying "Prove it."

I use irfanview all the time, too, at work, as well as Bridge for re-organizing and Picasa for rotation checks.

My reference to "white" was about saving as a jpeg, ("transparent" becomes "white") not about gif images.

"I don't believe I've ever been able to save an animated or transparent gif and have that translate into jpg properly." I probably should have said " I don't believe I've ever been able to save an animated or transparent gif as a jpeg and have those aspects translate properly.

Alive and as Ornery as ever

Janlafata could open a gif with (or without) Transparency in his Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 .. And save it as a png.
I haven't had time to bootover to Vista (or W7) see if Windows can see a png image...
But I think they will

Just checked a png in W7 .. it's OK
W7 can't see a gif either.

Want to know how to edit the Irfanview Registry in Vista or W7 .. To be able to edit the R click context menu .. Like one could in XP ??
See the top direct click choices ??

What you said is true for a gif without transparency or animation.
However ... I happen to know what Janlafata is using gifs for .. And they have transparency.

Happy Holidays to you and yours also.
